Has any one ever installed an alarm on a charter bus before? I need to install one with proximity detectors on it especially in the rear engine area. Does anyone know what detectors have the widest ranges on them and of course have the least false alarms. Any help on this subject would br greatly appreciated. BTW, the bus is 24v but I plan to use 12v signals front radio/amplifier area wires.

You propably have to do some trial and error for this type of installation. There are some perimeter sensors that have an elliptical circumfrence of 6-7 feet and if you need a wider circumference, you can wire in a pair of sensors in series while diode isolating the sensors from each other to reduce false alarms.

I've never installed an alarm on a charter bus, but maybe this will give you a few ideas.

A while back I read an artical about installing alarm systems on RVs.  The 'trend,' at least at the time, was to actually use wireless home alarms.  They have wide range prox sensors, and could be set up much easier in big vehicles.  Of course, they don't have wireless keychain remotes, instead they used the standard push button alarm panel found in houses.  This may save you quite a bit of labor.

I appreeciate the help so far. The biggest thing the customer want is to stop individuals from going behind the bus (school kids) and smoking. Do the wireless home systems offer a sensor that may accomplish this you think. The sensor would probably have to endure heat in the engine compartment though.

Try this link: www.spal-usa.com and ask for AS80 (34500117) and WIS (35600037). WIS is a wireless infrared sensor made to be used in RVs. I'm not sure if is available in USA but you can check.

You could use home motion detectors. They generally run on 12V, and provide either a normally open or normally closed circuit. Wire in like a normal Prox. sensor, using a normally open circuit (when it trips, it will send out a ground). You won't have warn away, unless you set up 2 sensors. Use one for a large field (warn) and the other for close field (full trigger)

As far as 12V/24V? The usually use a pair of batteries in series. Go off a single battery with both power and ground to get your 12V.

Do you think these sensors will withstand the heat in engine compartment?

Probably not. If you need to trigger a zone behind the bus, you could use something like a Viper 508D proximity sensor. Get it up in the rear window, angled down and out to just catch the back of the bus area. Be worth a shot.
