I was wondering if anyone could give me some of the benefits of having a security system installed in a vehicle and also some of the drawbacks.

you mean besides the obvious advantages ????

such as protecting contents and/or preventing the vehicle from being stolen.... is this a trick question?

maybe asking for benefits was a bit of a stupid question. However i am not so sure about the drawbacks of security systems.

Depending on the installation: if not properly installed with good components, maybe a false sense of security, possible annoyance factor to the neighbors if it falses, possible no-starts if the starter protection fails, leaving you stranded. Properly installed, these shouldn't be a major concern.
