I am about to install a two-way remote starter in my 2000 4Runner SR5 Sport. I have read a lot on here from others who have done the same.
I have two questions to put out there:
I think I know how to identify and find all the wires I need under the dash to connect the unit. The exception is the tach wire. I know were to find it under the hood, but I know it must also be under the dash and I am wondering if anyone knows where it is and how to identify it. I really don’t want to have to cross the firewall, as I am sure this wire already does this if I can find it. I also don’t want to remove the gauge cluster if I can avoid it. Again, I’m sure it is under there somewhere, much more readily accessible. Even if I do remove the cluster to tap it behind there, I still don’t know how to identify it. Can anyone help?
Second, I want to do this remote starter all the way, meaning I want to use the extra buttons on it that allow for extra options. I want to wire in the ability to roll down (and up!) the rear window with the remote. I figure the best way to do it is to tap into the wires behind the switch on the dash. That whole area comes apart really easily and I can obviously easily identify the wires there. Has anyone done this before?
Most of the posts I have read about remote starters seem to be people who have only put in the remote starter. That’s great, and I’m not even there yet, but I want to take it all the way and have the windows working, the locks, all of it. Does anyone have any experience in the peripheral options and connections?
Any help would be very much appreciated before I ****** my truck.

you'll definitely need window controllers to do the windows. Something like a DEI 530T or similar; you'll need one for the front windows and one for the rear window.
The tach wire will be AC voltage and will increase with engine RPM.
You'll also need an immobilizer bypass. All in all a pretty straightforward install.

Tukes, I am trying to do the exact same thing! I picked up the Deluxe 200 2-way remote starter from Bulldog Security. So far I have everything connected except the door locks, rear window, and tach. Did you find out where to get the tach inside the cabin? I also need to pick up the Transponder bypass tomorrow. Let me know how things have gone for you on this project. Maybe we can exchange e-mails and work on this together. I too would like to hook up all the extra's. tukes] wrote:

grab tach at the diagnostic plug. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

--I've never found tach at the diagnostic plug on a 2000 4Runner, and I've done a lot of those and hunted all around for inside tach. But usually the ECM is behind the glove box, or you can pull the instrument cluster.
The remote starter's install manual should tell you how to test the tach wire, with a digital multimeter set to AC.
--As for the window, you NEED your unit to have an auxilary output that continues as long as you hold the button-----with some brands, the trunk-release output only pulses for one second, and the window will only roll down (or up) a small amount.
No need to go taking the rear-window switch apart. Behind the fusebox is a harness with a fairly wide plug in it. If I remember right from the '01 I did recently, the down wire is RED / black, and the up wire ought to be in there too if you poke around.
The window wires are negative-trigger, BUT, the window does not work unless the ignition is on.
Make a relay like this:
86: Connect the aux output from your RS, AND the window-down wire from the Toyota.
85 and 87 get fused, constant power.
87a: not used.
30: Connect this to the ignition wire on the Toyota. You have two ignition wires, and I forget which one you need to enable the window----make a temporary connection and try it out.
HOW IT WORKS: When you press "aux" on your remote, it sends a ground to the window-down wire on the car, AND to 86 on the relay at the same time...........the relay is energized, which jumps 87 and 30 together.......which powers up the ignition on the car.

You guys are right. The best way is to get it at the Diagnostic plug. The tach signal enters the cabin on the passenger side behind the glove box and goes straight over to the instrument cluster. That harness is way up near the inside top of the dash. Impossible to get to. I ran a tach wire through the gromet for the hood release. Wasn't that bad to get connected at the diagnostic connector. I am getting a little worried about the lock/unlock and rear window thing. The bulldog unit I have has an output called "Dual Pulse Door Unlock Output" which says on press of unlock will unlock the driver door, two presses within 3 sec will unlock all doors. This is exactly how the factory keyless entry works. There is really not much information in the install manual about how this works. The rear window thing is what worries me the most. Pressing and holding the rear window/trunk button on the factory remote control rolls down the rear window. Somewhere a signal is getting sent to the Body ECU to make this happen. Does anyone know where the keyless entry receiver is? Is it build into the Body ECU? This is a 2000 4Runner Limited...

A good trick for tach on all Toyotas, if your not sure about tach. They all use separate coils, one each cylinder. It's always the 3rd wire from the left on the coil. For 2 stage unlock, all new Toyotas are set up for a single wire to do this. Turn the key in the drivers door slowly, if it just unlocks, it isn't. If you actually hear the door motor unlocking the drivers door, it is. I don't recall the old body style 4Runner being this way, but the new ones are. On the new 4Runners, the only way i've found to roll the back window down is to apply 12v to the dash switch and also to the second ignition wire at the same time. Whether the old styles are the same i'm not sure but probably....

I never found the tach wire inside the cabin. I went through the firewall in the driver footwell to the diagnostic plug. It is on the top of the engine, driver's side, black plastic with a cover on it. You need to take it off the clip that holds it, peel back a bunch of the electrical tape on the bottom and then the plug itself kind of opens up on a hinge. Under the plug, where the wires go in, you will find a bunch of colored wires going to one area and then a single black wire going into a circular area. That's the tach wire you need. Get a t-tap at Radio Shack and tap it. Put it all back together and tape the hell out of it. Poke a hole throught that grommet in the firewall with a screwdriver and feed the wire through. That's what I did and it was really easy. I wanted to avoid crossing the firewall but i really didn't want to take the gauge cluster apart, so I chose the lesser of two evils and did this. No problem.
I got the door locks set up with the diode isolation and all (a new move for me, but not a big deal at all), but I fell short of getting the rear window done. I don't miss it, but it still burns me that it is not done.
