Just had a 791xv installed on my f-350 and need some help.  When I activate the remote start, the glow plug light comes on for maybe a second and then goes off.  The remote start then waits about 13-15 sec. and then kicks the starter over.  On cold mornings, the truck never starts on the first try.  When I use the key, the glow plug light stays on for 6-8 sec. and then goes off.  The installer told me that the glow plug was warming up even though the light wasn't on but I refuse to believe him.  If this is the case, how come the truck won't start on the first try?  He did install a 528t but I'm wondering why I get such different results between the remote start and just using my key. I get constant fuel pump sounds and others with my key but not with the remote start.   Can somebody help?

I have never seen a Ford Diesel start on the first try EVERYTIME.....Most R / S manufacturers give a 50 / 50 on starting first time like a Gas F/I engine.
To verify what I mean:
Start your Truck with the key & count how many cranks it takes to Start each time out of 3 tries.   I bet the crank time is different each time.
Not that this is bad, but that is why the R / S has a built in 3 or 4 try for that reason

Sounds like you may have 2 different issues. The wait to start light issue I'm not sure of, it could be something as simple as both accessory wires aren't hooked-up. The starting on the first time issue is easier. Up the crank time. This is a simple programming change and the shop that installed it shouldn't charge you anything to do it. These trucks often have to crank for what seems like an eternity, especially when they're cold. The truck has it's own anti-grind function so even if the truck does start before the crank time ends the starter won't keep spinning.

I dont think the crank time is a issue but I can up that to 1.6 if needed.  The thing I'm worried about is the glow plug light not staying on with the remote start, but staying on when just using the key.  I'm thinking the glow plugs aren't heating up properly.

Are the other "dummy lights" coming on when the RS is activated? If all the other lights are coming on in the instrument cluster and the truck actually starts, even if not on the first try, that means the ignition is being energized. When that happens the PCM sends the signal to the GPCM with instructions on what the glow plugs should do. This signal is seperate from the one that is sent to the dash cluster for the wait to start light. So it is possible that the glow plugs are coming on. One way to tell if the glow plugs are coming on would be to test a wire at a glow plug with a multi-meter to see if it is getting power when the RS is activated. If you have a hood pin switch that disables the RS when the hood is open, you'll need to disable it for the test. 1.6 seconds is not an unreasonable crank time for the 6.0 diesel. It may even need to be more. This can be trial and error.

yes, the glow plugs can stay on for as long as 2 minutes after the pickup is started. the wait to start light will stay on for up to 30 seconds, but the plugs continue to heat, this helps to elevate the cylinder temps to minimize emissions until the block is hot enough to take over.

there is something not right though with the light going out that soon. as others have said, 2 accessory wires (igniton, accessory, 2nd accessory)need to be hooked up.

GLOW PLUG RELAY..under the hood, pass. side on the firewall. (looks like a little amplifier) has 3 plugs in it. green plug (middle one) middle wire GREEN / WHITE Its Posative while the plugs are warming. On the excursion diesel the relay pack is on the valve cover (same plug, same wire color)

Hey Gary, I thought that the new Ford's were all databus controlled for the glow plug ? Does this mean that there's no need for a TR-7 module for the 2006 King Ranch diesel that I did the other night ??

Think I got it.  Tech told me that there is no wait to start wire on the 05's.  He went in and programmed the glow plugs to be on a accessory not ignition or maybe it was the other way around.  Whatever he did, glow plug light stays on now.  Tech told me that you can either program this or wire it.  Didn't make alot of since to me but whatever he did it worked.  I really need to check the voltage going to the plugs and I will get around to this.  Thanks for all your input.  This sight is great.
