allo:

thanks for all the help and information so far. the12volt has been able to provide me with almost everything I need to figure out almost every issue i've had self-installing my clifford avantguard 5. everything is working right now.

I have one issue on my 2001 subaru impreza when remote starting. If it's cold enough outside, the car will idle between 1500 and 2000 rpms some times. when warm, the car will idle around 500-750. I trained the rpm for the alarm when warm.

when I remote start the engine, sometimes the crank is too short, so it won't start. I can take care of that as soon as I get my cliffnet wizard cable.

after the second sometimes third cranking, it starts, runs for a few seconds and shuts down and does not try again. sometimes i will push the button again and it'll remote start fine and keep running. sometimes it starts fine the first time. i haven't scientifically proven what the idle speed of the car is on the times that it shuts down, but i can hear that it's relatively high compared to warm. (plus i know it's cold outside, real cold here right now)

is there a setting for adjusting the allowable idle variance in cliffnet wizard?

any other ideas why that'd be happening?

long story short, does Intellistart shut down if the RPM's stay too high?

The intellistart will not shutdown with high idles.  It sounds like you either tapped the worng tach wire or did not program rpms.  You should not have to adjust crank times with the tach hooked up it does that automatically.  IS4 Should always start perfectly.  You might want to try a injector for the tach,  Cliffords do not always like newer coilpack ignitions if that where you went for the signal.

Actually, Intellistart WILL shutdown with high idle. Iamfromit, since you have programmed for warm weather right now, the high idle limit is being hit, thus shutting down. You have even stated yourself that is is really cold right now in your area.You will notice that when this happens, the intellistart doesnt try to start the car again, as it would with a short-crank condition.

I have dealt with this situation on my personal cars. My quick solution is to just pick an RPM between your warm and cold weather, and program the intellistart to it. If you want to be picky, start with your warm idle, and just keeping adding 100 rpms until the problem goes away. This does take a while, but eventually, you will find your sweet spot. I did it this way with my gf's 99 Corolla, and it ended up being 1100 rpms for her car.

Thanks for your replies.

As OmarR indicated, the car will sometimes crank once, too short, and then try again. Cold weather starts on my Subaru are tricky for me! I can't imagine the circuitry that tries to mimick my brain's decisions about how long to crank and what not... I notice that when the remote start attempt is successful, it will run for a short period and then die gracefully at the IS4's hands. It does not try to restart after that type of shutdown. When it initially does not turn over, the starter tries several times to get it started until it runs and either idles until I enter the vehicle, or shutsdown from what I suspected was the high idle speed due to temperature.

OmarR seems to be correct in his description of what the alarm/RS is presenting to me. I hope that when I get my hands on a cliffnet cable that I'll be able to have it all sorted out.

On that note, does anyone know a good place to get a Cliffnet Wizard Interface Cable and adaptor?

The only thing I will add is this,  I have three intellistart 4 installed on manual transmission vehicles connected to the negative side of the coils.  I often drive off with the is4 engaged and do not put it in reverse or step on the brakes until my first stop and i do not hear the relays click off until I hit the brakes the first time, I have reached up to 4500 rpms before on shifts and no shut off.  I however do acknowledge that clifford says it will shut down on high rpms, I have not seen it do it though.  It could also be the way the starter is reading the tach signal on my vehicles, becuase they are all vws. Maybe dei tweaked the software though, because it should shut down for safety reasons.  You analyzed well though and because it does not try again I agree with OmarR.  Try the reprogramming.  Also if you can remote start it then sit it in it and rev it up and see if shuts down.  Cables and software are often found on ebay.
