are there any better diodes to use than others? ive used 1n4001, 1n4003, 1n4004 and 1n5401 im going to be ordering a bulk amount of one of them, just not sure what one is the best/most used one

well those all have different ratings and are what make them different. i could not tell you the best one because there are better ones for different applications. but in the lines of better in quailty i would go with a motorola or a higher end porduct name that will get you better results and less break down and faulure of the component. witch will lead in less problems. i always try to do it right the first time and usaully i'm not going back and having to do things twice and look bad.

posted_imageHi!  i think  it depend the type of work you want to do with the diode  usualy  I use the 1n4004 to drive more than two relais     this diode is good up to 1 amp.

when I installe a remote stater on a Volsk I need to isolate the parking light because they have right and left side circuit  and the remote starter use only 1wire.  So I use  2 diodes that are good for 6 amps.

PS! most of the time 1n4004 will do most commun job.

The 1N5401 has a 3A current rating, while the 1N400x diodes are all 1A.

If you're using for higher power applications, you would use that over the smaller ones, but you could always parallel them to get added current handling as mentioned.

Differences between the 1N4001 ... 1N4004 are just in the reverse voltage breakdown capability; 50V for the 1N4001, 100V/1N4002, 200V/1N4003 and 400V for the 1N4004.

For automotive applications, that isn't really much of an issue; most of the time it's not going to see anything other than battery voltage in reverse bias.
If you can get the 1N4004's for the same price, may as well get them over the 1N4001, otherwise, just stock up on the lower cost ones, since the higher reverse voltage blocking won't matter much, and 1A is enough for most of the common situations you'd be using it for, driving relays and signal isolation.
