I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd with OEM security system. The range is limited for unlock and lock and I understand that Jeep changed (improved, different send receive module?) the system with the 1996-1998 models.

As the vehicles are basically the same with respect to console and location of the receiver, is it possible to update the 1995 system by adding components from a 1996 or later model?

Yes, but you would need the entire multiplexed system along with the BCM to do this. Anything is possible with enough time and money
