i have a 99 chevy cavalier auto.  has passlock 2 security

just bought it online, and now im trying to figure out whats teh best solution to having this installed on my car?  im not electtronically-savvy, and i heard that my car, a 99 cavalier, has the passlock 2 and needs an immobolizer to bypass the passlock.  should i goto a pro and have it installed for me?  if so where could i go to bring the kit to them, and should i also supply them the starter bypass module as well for them to install?  what price range am i looking at for the full install?

my other alternative is spending a few days/weekends with a friend who might and actually knows more about wiring than myself, and getting down to try to install it ourselves.  i do have the manual for my car to find the right wire colors.  but if we decide to do it ourselves, is it a good idea to buy spare XX(ie 16, 18, or 22) gauge wire and butt connectors for the install, or does the viper kit comes with everything i need to connect the car's wiring harness' and the viper 160xv harness'?

i really really really thank you and everyone else on their advise and guidance.

Here in Maryland just about anyplace that's not a national chain would install it. Open the phone and start calling...

Take it to the pro. Passlock I system and a bit of electronic handicap isn't the best combination for a DIY. It has a Passlock I system not Passlock II which is a bit less cooperative. Don't buy your equipment else where and bring it to the shop to have them install it. Good shop won't install it. If they do, they will charge you a lot more than if you would have made the purchases from them. Why? You don't buy your groceries to the restaurent to have them cook for you, do you? It's a lot faster to have things already set up than is to make preperation. Finally, the most important piece of advice I can probably give you is make sure you get a shop that is willing to take care of you when the unit fails to work.

or you could buy the GMBP... it only have 4 wires to hook up...it's hard to imagine anyone could screw that up......

the unit should come with everything you need to install it, short of the bypass module.... if you are uncomfortable beginning this job then dont... take it to a shop... at least you have the wisdom to recognize your own limitations.....

"or you could buy the GMBP... it only have 4 wires to hook up...it's hard to imagine anyone could screw that up......"

^kgerry, i already bought the viper 160XV kit, meaning i really dont want to through out more cash to get another kit and go through the hassle of selling this one ,no offense.  but i heard alot of good coming from DEI-viper, and many ppl recommended me getting this brand over the rest.

thepencil, i will look around my area for a shop that allows walk-in items to be installed, and i hope they wont charge me an arm and a leg, otherwise i'll ask my friends who know a whole lot more of connecting wires than myself.  thanks guys for getting back to me.

The GMBP doesn't do Passlock I systemsposted_image He will have to go with a PLXR . I use strictly the PLXR for Passlock I and they have been very successful for me in the past.

You will still need to purchase a bypass module even if you have the  viper 160XV . The Viper doesn't come with a bypass module for the Cavalier, but if your going to be getting a pro to do the installation, they will have a bypass module in stock for your vehicle already.

In the event that you do want to try to do this installation with yor buddy, make sure that you make your constant power connection first before any other wires because of the limited space you have by the steering column of this vehicle.

To save time, you only have to remove the steering wheel shroud and this will reveal two plugs to the left of the steering wheel, one BLACK nad one WHITE. The WHITE will be on the bottom and the BLACK will be on the side just above the WHITE plug. YOu will find the BULB TEST wire along with the two RED power wires and the LIGHT GREEN keysense wire.

The other plug will have all the ACC and IGN wires attached to it. Make sure your aware of where your wire stripper is when you strip back the wire incase it grounds out to the steering column or the tilt arm.

The tilt arm you will need to use a pari of vise grips to turn as it will be contact cemented in place. Stupid Chevy !! I don't know why they can just use the BLUE Locktite instead.
