the second Ingition wire (provided your car had one) was needed for the starter.  The reason I ask is because my car has a 2nd wire, but the remote starter is already working with only the 1st ignition wire attached - it just starts "a little rough" (some sputtering).  With a key start, everything light up just fine (no sputtering).

Any thoughts?

TIA, smik

Yup, tach wire is on (through the firewall at the ignition coil).  I'm gonna hook it up, but why would the absence of the second ignition wire cause this?

The second ignition wire is a necessary hook up on most vehicles because it controls the transmission module and other electrical devices in the car. If the 2nd ignition is not powered up, you may get error lights on the dash.

I only have one "Ignition" output coming from my RS.  Can I just jumper it to the 2nd IGN wire, or should I attach it by use of a relay.  If I have to use a relay here's my attempt at how it might be wired up (I'm really not sure but I thought I'd try after reading the "Basics - Relays" area):

30 - 12v constant

87 - to IGN 2 wire (at harness)

87a - ?? (ground)?

85 - one side of something with 12v at start or crank?

85 - other side of something with 12v at start or crank?

TIA,

smik

Wire a relay like this:

  • 85 & 87 : 12 volts Constant FUSED ( 20 amps )
  • 86 : To ground out when running wire on RS unit
  • 30 to ignition # 2 on vehicle
  • 87a : NOT USED

Thanks Jeff. OK, I think I understand now although I'm a little confused about 86. As far as I'm aware (from my remote starter documentation), the IGN wire coming FROM my RS brain supplies 12v+ when the starter is initialized with the remote. Would this change the pinouts as follows:

  • 85: IGN wire from RS (12v + when intialized by remote)
  • 86: Ground
  • 30: to IGN #2 on vehicle
  • 87: 12v constant FUSED @ 20 AMPS
  • 87a not used

Thanks, smik

Thanks the12volt - I was using Notepad (from the start) - I think it had something to do with my firewall

I was reading what you posted and I don't know if i'm the first to notice but you have the tach wire on the wrong place. It should go on the ignition coil not the alternator.

Thanks bdl666 - I edited the post (I actually connected it at the coil - not the alternator)

The way you have this would be OK too, but you will have this relay active all the time ( or whenever you turn the ignition over ), where as my relay configuration is on only when remote started

Ok thanks (I'm gonna hook it up as per your instructions)!

Just for my understanding though, how is pin 86 going to "ground out" when it's going to be attached to a wire that is supplying 12v + when the remote starter is intialized (IGN wire from RS brain)?  I have a hard time understanding that would work - that's why I suggested the alternative configuration.

TIA, smik
