I searched to see if you should disconnect the battery before an install and it is about 50/50?.So should you or not?Won't you fry stuff by connecting wires that are live.Is it better to do it and how do you find out if your vehicle will need to be reset if you do disconnect it(without actually doing it)

You should disconnect the battery. If you do the install correctally you shouldnt fry anything, but why take the chance?

I have yet to disconnect a battery putting an alarm in.  How are you supposed to test things with no power in the car?

Can't you test and label your wires then do your connections

Most issues are w/ incorrect wiring of systems and a disconnected battery provides no protection, once reconnected you are all done.

A DMM, common sense and a few inline fuses are all you need. A disconnected battery resulsts in reseting clock, Radio (some may need codes to get back,) etc.. Never mind a pissed off customer if they did not know and have to reprogram anything.

Like cntrylvr79 stated, how can you properly test the wires? Just my opinion.

Well I read on here that my jeep ignition harness unplugs so it is easy to do connections and I was just wondering if plugging it back in live would hurt anything,My buddy installed a performance chip into his car but never unplugged the battery and it started smoking.

There is no reason to unplug the the ignition switch in a jeep liberty. All the main ignition wires are easily accessed without unpluging anything.

have to say i never unplugged a beattery and i test all my wires first..

shouldn't be a problem if done correctly
like the man siad....

i usually wire the alarm in without the fuse in then put the fuse for the alarm in last

Regarding the smoking of a DME/ECU when chipping... that ONLY happens when the chip is installed backwards.  When you install a chip the wrong way around, you wind up putting the +12v and +5v onto a ground and a signal input pin.  That leads to a smoked chip instantly.  To install a performance chip you just disconnect the computer, open it, install, and reconnect.  Disconnecting the battery does nothing that unplugging the computer and putting on the bench won't do... posted_image

depends on ecu but what p-man said is right.

if you have to keep the ecu in the car for any reason then disconnect the battery before the install of the chip
