I installed a Designtech Ready Remote car starter (Model 23927) on my 99 Alero (3.1L V6)that does not have passlock. After connecting all the wires related to the remote start operation I attempted to start the car. It started and ran for a second and then would stop. the unit would continue to try to start the car and then time out eventually. I checked the wiring, the hood pin the whole 9 yards. My first thought was that the voltage on the battery was not coming up fast enough to satisfy the computer since this unit is factory set to run in "no tach" mode. I put my meter on the battey, started the car and it did seem like the voltage did not come up right away. I then thought i should go through and change the factory setting so the unit would use the tach lead to tell if the car was running. This is where i had the problem. The wiring diagram online says the tach lead comes out of the ECM and is violet/white. I can not find this wire. There is a 12 pin connecter on the back of the insturment panel where i figured the tach lead had to come in. I did not see the wire there either. So my questions are, am I on the right track? Could there be a lag in my multimeter that is causing me to think the voltage is coming up slowly? And where can i find the tach lead? A big thanks to anyone who is kind enough to help.

I'd be very surprised if that car doesn't have PASSLock II-----the Malibu and Grand Am are they same car, and they do.
When you turn on the ignition, does one of the warning lights on the dashboard read "SECURITY"?

I think Chris Luongo may be correct. Oldsmobile |

if you use a 555L from DEI you dont have to use resistors it also is a learning module so in cold weather when resistance might change so wiil the module also used for pass lock one....it comes with verry specific directions

Thanks for all the help. I know this sounds crazy but I am 99% sure this vehicle does not have passlock. There is no light that comes on and says SECURITY. Also, would i have been able to get this far if there were passlock on the vehicle? The car starts it just does not continue to run. I also talked to a service tech at the dealer and he showed me where the tach wire is. I am going to give it a try tomorrow and see what happens. I will post the results.

Better hold onto that 1% doubt. Passlock isn't an optional feature; every '99 Alero is equipped with it. The Passlock system uses a fuel cut-off; it will cause exactly the symptoms you're describing.

Actually, it would work just fine. Passlock systems use a resistance built into the switch, not anything in the key. No special key is needed.
