Just bought an 01 subaru outback 5spd that has one of these units installed.  I have studied the documentation left in the glove box for the unit, and have learned by trial and error that apparently this unit does NOT arm/disarm the subaru alarm.  If I lock the doors using the door switch in the car  then unlock with the remote, the alarm(horn) sounds and cannot be turned off with the remote.

Also, the remote start appears not to work, or at least, I don't know how to make it work. I have searched for a valet switch or any other switch that might be hidden, but can't figure it out.  The ignition circuit appears to be energized,(dash lights come on) the lights come on, then everything shuts off.   Don't really need the remote start, but it makes me crazy to not know how it all works.  Any hints would be appreciated. THANKS

According to DEI, there is no way to disarm the factory alarm other than the factory remote. This may not be true for two reasons, one- they have said that about other cars that i know have a disarm wire, two- they say you need the factory remote to arm also and you are doing this with the lock switch. Can you disarm the factory while turning the key in the door? If so, it could be interfaced to turn off with the AM6. As for the remote start not working, sounds like a wiring problem. There is no immobilizer on that car so that's not the issue. Dash lights are on so it's not a hood switch or cut off switch problem iether. It would have to be diagnosed with a DVM...

Thanks for the response Mike.  Would it be customary in an installation of this type for the factory system to still be in place?  In other words, if I get some of the factory remotes, would they still provide the factory functionality without any rewiring?    The aftermarket system is of no value to me, especially if the remote start doesn't work and it is not usable to arm and disarm the alarm.   All it appears to do is lock and unlock the doors.

I wonder if these units have any used resale value?

Tested arming with the door switch, then unlocking with the key. It did NOT disarm, so the alarm went off.  Had to use the key in the ignition to shut it up.

The factory alarm is only controlled by the factory remotes...... and they don't work when the engine is running.

I have heard that the factory keyless unit is behind and to the right of the radio....and that you can use the remote start to interrupt the ignition feed to the keyless module while the RS is on..... but you'll still need to carry around the factory remote for arm/disarm.

As for the remote start......if you're getting the ignition to come on, you're pushing the right button, and even if there is a toggle switch, it must be in the proper position or it wouldn't come on at all.

You said the car's a 5-speed, right? That AM6 is not designed for a manual transmission car......... the installer might have just installed it anyway without any safety features....... or me might have wired up something to somehow preven the car from starting up in gear.

When you tried the remote start, was the car in neutral? Was the parking brake set? What if you try it while holding in the clutch?

Thanks for your reply Chris.  I have tried the remote start with the brake on, clutch in, in neutral and it is always the same. Dash lights come on for a second, then back to sleep.  The installer went as far as putting the remote start warning label under the hood next to the battery.  Can't figure out why someone would go to the trouble to install the thing if they didn't hook up the remote start AND could not use the remote to arm/disarm.  If the factory remotes were lost or something it would be way cheaper to replace them than to install this thing I would think.  Ebay is floating in them.

I wonder if the factory switch still works, but I guess I'll have to get a remote and get it programmed to find out.

Just a little tidbit.  I have read in some of the posts that with regard to a manual transmission it needs to be shut down in newtral with the parking brake on.  I think the systems monitor the rpms and the parking brake light to insure it is in fact in newtral.  Just my 2 pennys.

More weirdness now.  I have found that if I lock the door with the door open, using the switch on the door OR the automate remote, then close the door, the alarm will arm.  The only way to disarm I can find so far is to use the ignition switch dance.  Locking the door after it is closed does not appear to arm it.

Question for installers. I bought some stock remotes off of ebay, hoping to move back to factory functionality.  However, the car will not go in to programming mode following the instructions in the manual.  I tried several times to get it to go.

Question is, would it be common for an installer to disconnect the factory unit when installing the automate system?  As mentioned in above posts, the alarm still arms when locking the door using the door switch, so it must still be in place.

Perhaps the automate was installed because the factory module/switch went bad.

I'm not sure if you already have this in the glovebox or it's just the owner's manual you have. This may help you track down the remote start problem. https://directechs.com/guides/manuals/ig/automate/N562A_07-05.pdf
Check to see if the green and purple wires for the starter are hooked up. How are you getting the remote start sequence to initiate? Can you initiate it while the key is turned to on but not running?

If the starter is not engaging during remote start then try this. Initiate the remote start sequence and then quickly put the key in and start it. Are the parking lights on? Turn the key to off and see if it might stay running. You may not be able to initiate the start sequence while the key is in due to the ignition sense disabling the remotes. You will have to time is just right. This would at least narrow the problem down and tell us if the other functions are working and it's just not engaging the starter during remote start.
