I hope this question isn't as dumb as it seems. I am doing a basic alarm install on an 02 sunfire and can't get to the ignition harness. It looks like you have remove the upper dash to remove the knee bolster panel, and the wires aren't easily accessible from under the dash. Any help would be appreciated.

just did one today. you don't have to do anything with the dash.  just remove the 3 screws on the lower steering cowling, then gently pop off the top steering cowling. you will see your ign. harness right there. or you can go underneath the knee bolster right by the drivers kick panel, you will see a large loom harness going up high toward the engine compartement, your ign harness is there as well. let me know how you make out

I did one last week- took off the cowl around the ignition like maxcat described- then unplugged the two ignition plugs- pulled them out about 3 inches to solder in the wires- piece of cake........

You will need to remove the steering column shroud. Three 9/32 bolts and you will need to remove the tilt arm. THe tilt arm on most Sunfire/Cavalier's are screwed on with thread lock. You will need to use a pair of vise grips to remove the handle. The paint will ship, but afterwards you can use some eletrical tape to cover the scrapped paint.

When you remove the shroud there will be two connectors under the steering column that you have to unclip. One BLACK and one WHITE. All your wire can be accessed here as well as in the back of the steering column you will find the WHITE brake wire as well. The parking lights ( BROWN +) will not be in the steering column, but you can find it in the driver's kick panel in a BLUE plug by the BCM.

Wrapping the tilt lever with a cloth before applying vise grips would be a better thing to do.
