is there some sort of relay that causes the dome light to come on when the handle is lifted but the doors are locked

nope. it only goes off when the door is opened.

Actually, i think he's right. I did an alarm on one and noticed that too. I don't remember what year blazer it was, but whever the driver door  handle was lifted the interior lights did trigger on.

I had a 1995 Beretta Z26 that did the same thing...but I have a 1998 S-10 that does not. I think it depends on whether or not you have power door locks (my S-10 does not) ...as far as where the wires are for that relay, I couldn't tell you. Good luck!
