I've had this unit installed for a couple months, with no problems. Lately, the remote has not been telling me the correct information for the status of the alarm. It would say the car is running, when its not, or that it is locked when its really unlocked. Now, the unlock botton won't work at all. I had to find a way to disconnect the alarm to be able to drive it. I found the "brain" of the alarm, and just pulled the plug that contained the power wire. Now, I didn't damage anything doing this, correct? When I get a new remote, I will most likely have to reprogram the alarm system? Any information would be great. This is installed in an 89 Cougar. Thanks alot.

yes when u get a new remote it must be programmed.  Also if u know where the valet button is.....then in the future and this problem comes up again.....u can manually disarm the alarm by turning the key on and hit the valet button once.

Where theres is a wire there's a way.

I tried the valet button, and it wasn't doing anything for me. I could have been doing it wrong, but I doubt it. But my main question is, did I damage the alarm system by pulling the connector out of it? That was the only way that I could find how to shut it off. Once I get a new remote and plug the alarm back in, what will need to be done? Or should I take it somewhere for someone to do? Thanks for the help so far.

No.... you didn't damage anything.

When you plug it back in, have the ignition on to the run position. This will keep the unit from going into full triggered status on powerup.

Your 2 way antenna could be malfunctioning as well. If the new remote doesn't seem to change anything that should be your next step.

I thought that it might be the antenna also, but my remote was banged up, so I am trying that first. I bought the newer version remote, which is the blue 479 model. Will I need to reprogram it?

I would hope so, You wouldn't want it to operate your system right out of the package. You'll need to program it to work with your system.

I found how to program the new remote to work with the system. Just have to wait till I get the new remote. I turn the key to the on position, hit the valet button 8 times, then press and hold the valet button, and hit the arm button on the remote. This is the auto learn channel. So that should be all I have to do.

Ok, I have been thinking about some things for when I try to program the new remote to work with the system. Can it be programmed when the alarm is going off? When I reconnect the alarm with the key in the run position the alarm will most likely go off. If the valet button doesnt work, what else should I do? I have alot on my mind so this may not sound logical. Sorry.

You need to try a different amount of valet button presses if it's not disarming. After you turn the ignition on you may need to press the valet 1-5 times. If you try all those and still have to luck then you need to unplug the switch and test it for continuity to insure that it is working properly. You aren't going to be able to program anything if the switch doesn't work.

Another question. When I get ready to do this, do I want my door or hood open or shut? I guess I would have to get in the car with everything shut, then plug the alarm back in? Then try to program the remote?

Well, I got the remote today finally, and I am having some difficulties with it. Somehow I got it to work with the one button configuration, meaning the lock button did both lock/unlock. I want the other configuration which would be channel 2. I've hit the valet button twice and held it, it blinks twice, then I hit the lock button on the remote. The alarm blinks twice three times in a row. Then I release the valet button and remove the key. But the remote wont work correctly. What to do?

Actually, anyone know how to program the transmitter to make it vibrate and such? Its different from the older model I believe since it has the P button on the back.

It will still work just like the old way by holding all 4 buttons down until u hear the beep. Or you can use the P button.
