I have a customer with a 2001 Beetle.I was wondering how to get around the transponder system W/O going to a dealer for reprogramming. It's 250 miles to the nearest VW dealer. Thanks Russ.

You are outta luck. Car needs to be hooked to the dealer's scan tool to retrieve the SKC that is required for programming. We used to be able to pull the necessary info with Vag-Com, give it to the dealer, and then they would hand over a SKC that was valid for 24hrs. However, in the interests of vehicle security or some other unknown BS, they will not do that anymore.

FWIW, European RFID keys are pretty secure.... they won't be hacking those like they did the FOrd ones a while ago....

Sorry mang...

Thanks Gus,I'll break the news and he'll have to bite the bullet.By the way it will start w/o the key but lights up a "key" lamp in the instrument cluster.Russ.
