05 Pathfinder not cranking from afar

Hey guys,

about 2 months ago or so i put a viper160 in an 05 Pathfinder for a customer. The unit works great but appearantly when the car is far away, it will not crank. The accessories turn on and everything it just doesnt crank. I havent been able to get the car to do this myself and i've gone over 100yards and he says it does it at closer ranges.  Has anyone seen this happen before?  I dont see this being a problem with the brain or antenna seeing as the car does everything except crank.

check the key ring and make sure it is tight...i have had problems with the ring being too large ....just  taped it to make it smaller and prob was solved

xscash has a good point...the rings in these nissans are ultra finicky about location, they have to be perfect....WHen the customer says its not cranking from far away, do they really mean its not cranking when "im inside my house at 6am on a cold day after its been sitting all night" or is it ALWAYS not cranking from a distance.....Did youhook up the second start wire? 

meltingplastic, please be more specific when you say ..." it will not crank ". Do you mean the truck will not even attempt to turn the starter over or does this mean that it cranks the starter but doesn't actually keep the truck running after crank ?

I think the customer might be accidentally sending you off on the wrong track a bit.

--The command-to-start signal from the remote either makes its way to the brain, or it doesn't.

I can't think of any possible way for the unit to energize the ignition, but not crank, based on the distance of the remote; it must be a coincidence.

Or, maybe like snotdobbs suggests, the times when they happen to be far away, is also a time when the car is cold or has been sitting; something like that.

--I don't think it's the transponder ring either. If the transponder bypass on a Nissan fails, the starter will crank fine; it just won't start.

If the red light on the dash is OFF when the remote start is on, the transponder bypass is okay.

--I would suggest the following as possible causes for the problem:

1. Failure to connect the second starter wire. The remote start will work sometimes, even with just the main starter wire connected.

2. Poor connection to starter wire(s).

3. Bad relay pack on Viper, or faulty crimps on Viper's wiring harness.

4. Problem with car. I know it's not an old car, but you never know. Do they always use the remote start? Make sure they're starting it with the key once in a while, to make sure the problem never happens then.

5. Incorrect tach wire. Sometimes, you can connect to a wire that puts out AC with the ignition on, even with the engine NOT running.

This will fool the RS into thinking that the engine is already running, and therefore the starter wire won't engage.

Remote-start the car, then hit the gas and race the engine-----in most cars, the RS will shut down. If yours doesn't, it just might be the wrong tach wire.

Also, in my experience, Nissans will work just fine on voltage sense, with 0.8 seconds crank time. Couldn't hurt to try it that way.

i had replied to this post but appearantly it got deletted. It tuns out the customers wife didnt understand what her husband was saying, the car was cranking just not starting. It turned out to need to relearn the tach for a lower temp even with the 2nd starter hooked up. I was def scratching my head for a while until i was able to get on the phone with him and he explained that it was cranking.
