this question might come from waayyyyy out in left field...but what is the difference between an actuator and a solenoid?  don't they both perform an action when current flow is provided?  for example door locks...trunk lids...door openers.  sorry if this insults anyones intelligence...but i just needed to know.

thanks

Not a dumb questions at all !! Here's the difference:

Actuator : Use for any device that requires two way activation where the resting position does not compremise performance of the device in the resting position like door locks.

Solenoid: Used for a one way activation of a device and when pulse dissipates, the solenoid returns back to it's resting position. Use for trunk releases, shaved doo handle kits, etc.

thanks a bunch jeff posted_image !

can an actuator be used for door-shaved applications? a customer brought me a rigged door lock actuator (with a spring around the collar...which makes it go back to the extended position, although the spring does not provide too much tension on the stem, it does the job of returning it to the extended position.)  can this contraption be used to pull the door handle lever?  I attached it to the door lever, and powered it up, and it opened the door (providing i was putting outward pressure on the door, but none the less...it opened it.)  how long would this set up work? is it safe? recommended?  i thought of adding a pull cord to the rod, in case the motor fails.  let me know any thoughts.

thanks in advanced.

p.s. i also got a suggestion for the automatic ign for show car i'll write later.

The only problem about an actuator is that is doesn't return back to it's original position unless the polarity is reversed ? If the contraption you are using is good and works, then use it but always have a back up incase it ever fails.

thanks jeff.

i will install a backup just in kase...i just hope it lasts a good while.

eehhh...how should i wire it up...like a door lock would be...or just a straight shot feed.  i imagine i would not use the door lock/unlock wires of the alarm...right.  they will have to be run in an AUX or trunk output...?

If the actuator you are using has it's own return mechanism, then wire it up like a trunk release. OTherwise wire it up like an actuator.

Depending on the quality of the actuator, the vehicle's door handle has enough force to spring the actuator back. I use actuators for trunk release as the key cylinder spring has enough force to spring back the linkage.
