Vehicle: 1998 Dodge Neon SOHC

Security: Audiox (Prestige Platinum) APS-997 with LCD remote

Latey I have been having issues with the remote start - it will crank for half a second but does not start and the LCD shows the car is running all accessories will be running if they are on but the car is not running, sometimes the alarm will go off (didn't really start that untill the system was installed)

The system has been self installed since Decemeber 2005 and was purchased new, it has been running fine except the past couple of weeks, the only additional things that has been done with the alarm is the stereo system, trunk sensor (tied into factory trunk light switch), there is no hood pin switch, the car would not learn the tach mode when first installed and was wired into the tach wire that feeds the factory tach under the dash but setup for voltage <.05 or .5 (have to look at the book) the battery has been disconnected and battery has been replaced in the LCD remote

the car will start if you try to engage remote start a second time (even if the alarm went off or not - the alarm going off is rare and I believe related to the bump in the trunk)

I have not re-checked programming since I disconnected the battery - is it possible the alarm brain lost its memory setting on battery disconnect?

I have not had a 2nd attempt fail yet

thanks in advance for any help provided

Are you saying that the starter is setup for voltage sensing? If it is, just increase your crank time a notch. If it attempts to start, fails and starts consistently on the second try I would have to think you are not running the starter long enough.

Try re-programing  the tach.

raise the tach to 1200 rpm and then learnposted_image      that will fix it.

If some of the people's suggestions don't  work you try moving your tach to a different source like an the negative side of an injector.

You are in voltage sense by the sound of things. Set it for >.5, or try the tach setting again. Your tach wire is probably a blk/gry wire at the igniton coil under the hood, not in the dash.

yes the alarm is set for voltage sense at <.5 on the tach wire which is a GrayLight Blue wire under the dash that comes from the CPU that is the feed wire for the dash's tachometer... it did not learn this and had read suggestions on here if that was the case to switch to voltage mode in which case it worked fine without any issues for the last few months until rescently as described

the car idles at about 900rpm or so, might be too low for the tach mode to pick up on, but this is not the first case I have read of the tach mode on any type of remote start alarm not picking up on a dodge/plymouth neon from 95+

If you are currently using voltage sense, the tach wire is not even being looked at by the R/S.  You have to choose one or the other.  The wire that feeds the dashboard's tach is probably DC.  That's why it didn't learn tach.  You need an AC wire for tach to work.  A Neon's gry/blk at ignition coil will work.  Also, if you are going to continue with the voltage sense mode, try >.5, not <.5.  This will make the R/S look for a bigger voltage jump.  It also my be advisable to use a 1.5 sec. crank time.  This whole problem could also be fixed by switching to tach and hooking to the correct wire, as tach setting is much more reliable, especially in very cold weather.

I've been looking through the APS997 installation manual and can't find the option for voltage sensing. Can someone tell me where in the book to look or how to set it up? I'd prefer to not have to run another wire through my firewall for tach sensing.

You mentioned that you were already in voltage sensing mode, just increase your starter crank time and you should be fine. It is listed on page 3, feature 10 in the manual listed here.

Keep us posted.

Cranks, but not long enough to start...... and then KEEPS the ignition and accessories on? That sounds more like a wrong tach wire to me. Make a couple of tests:

TEST: Remote-start the car. As soon as it starts (or pretends to start)........do the parking lights come on immediately? Or do they come on 10 seconds AFTER the car has started?

---If they come on immediately, you're in tach-sensing mode.
---If they take 10 seconds to come on, you're in voltage-sensing mode.

TEST: If you ARE in tach-sensing mode.......remote start the car. Hit the gas and rev the engine way up---the unit has over-rev protection and the remote start should shut down.

-------------------

--If you're in tach mode and the over-rev protection doesn't work, you probably have the wrong tach wire.

--If you are in voltage mode.......my experience with Audiovox product in Dodge Neons tells me that you will have good results if the CRANK TIME is programmed for 1.0 second........and the VOLTAGE LEVEL for "less than" .5 volts.

(If you leave it on "greater than" .5 volts, it'll still work fine, except when the air conditioner is on, and then it will shut down because the voltage doesn't increase enough when the car is running.

---------------------------------

As others here have said, here's the deal with the programming:

--I forget which feature # it is, because the 997 is new, but there's a setting for Voltage or Tach.

--If it's in Tach mode, it looks ONLY for signal on the tach wire.......... the settings for Voltage level, Crank time, and Averaging have NO EFFECT on anything.

--If it's in Voltage mode, the GREEN/ orange tachometer wire is IGNORED, and the unit will operate according to however you set the Voltage Level, Crank time, and Averaging features.
