the air bags scare me when i install an alarm and looking for wires , i know they are normaly marked in yellow , and i am to use a meter and not a test light , but i am still freaked out by them , one mistake and wham ......so has anyone mistakenly probed one and ??? what happened ??? am i scared for no reason ??? i have heard from fire fighters that even with the batt disconected and the fuse pulled they can retain power and go off , i know fire fighters have their fears of them as well .

as long as you are using a digital multimeter you should be ok. if you are using an old needle type meter you can possibly get the airbag light to turn on or in the worse case get punched in the face by a chemical explosive! always double check that your meter is set on volts also because ohms/resistance testing, induces a voltage into the curcuit you are testing.

It's scare the crap out of me too! It's a good thing, otherwise you and I will be poking at ever wire we see. The next thing you know BOOM!
I heard a lot of bad things about guns and seen what it can do in movies. I don't know anyone who been shot by one or what it feels like to be shot. I only know it can be dangerous if you are not careful.
Having said all that basically my point is stay within your limit of your skill. If you are unsure about something ASK! Someone has to know, afterall some engineer did design the airbag wire.

Funny this popped up a local "know it all" told me my quote for a remote start/alarm was outrageous and he would install one himself....A tech at the chevy dealership and I share information on electronics...The same guy that said my quote was outrageous depoyed both airbags while attempting to install the remote start/alarm, was unable to get the vehicle started after deploying them do to other wiring issues... needless to stay could have seriuosly injured himself. Now his vehicle warranty is voided and he has to pay big bucks to get a nearly brand new car fixed... just my 2 cents. -------------

aaahhh yeah ,,, this wasnt a post to say .... diy dont touch your own car ....pay us to do it !! ....ive installed many alarms , built cars from the ground up ...all that ....ok ...i just have seen the broken bones a airbags can do ..... and it scares the shhh out of me , yeah i can see that the airbag wires are marked in yellow and has warnings on it .....but if you look under the dash of my saturn , ( one of seven cars now ) they arent all that clearly marked . i just want to know more . after all thats why we are ALL here !

Well here are some thing about air bags.I did here about police officer getting killed .How?? With a slim down in a door trying to get the door open in which somebody locked the keys in.The side airbag deployed inside the door and the slim jim flew up into his throat. I went to an airbag course and they told me a test they on these.They put a airbag unit on the ground and put a cement block on top of it.Then it was deployed the cement block went the distance of 1/2 a football field.But do remember when they are deployed in a car accident they are stopping a very big force usually a 100 mph force.The force of the car stopped suddenly and the person being forced forward at the speed of the car.

If you ever have to probe into a harness that contains airbag/srs wires then you must use a DMM on the CORRECT setting. There are some vehicles where it is a must to test for a wire in certain airbag harness, horn in some vehicles is found in the airbag harness going into the wheel airbag.
Airbags are no joke and you must be careful when probing into any harness that either has yellow tape, yellow loom, or has a yellow plug. Newer vehicles only have yellow plugs to identify airbag/srs wires.
If you are scared, uncertain, or otherwise spooked about a wire/harness/plug then find someone who has a little more experience with this.

good info , scary to think that an air bag can off from trying to open the door , any info on what he hit to set off the air bag ??? i have heard this from another source so i know its possable , some cars have the airbag wires wraped in a yellow loom the whole length , but i have a 95 sat i just put a alarm into , under the dash the airbag loom is just black like the rest under there and only has a yellow plug ....wouldnt be that hard to stab the wrong wire if a person isnt paying attention 100%

I was just sharing an experience not trying to imply anything. As suggested by others use a quality DMM on the correct settings you should be ok.  -------------
