I was hoping someone had some Tips on Placement of the bypass ring on a 06 civic. I installed a Remote start with a Crimestopper "key in the box" bypass. The car was REALLY easy to do electronically, Except I cannot get the car to start 100% of the time. When it does start the Green key on the dash comes on then immediately goes off. When it doesn't start the key comes on (maybe flashing) and the car just cranks. I've tried a new bypass module, same thing happens, starts 3 times out of 4. I have the antenna ring, which is wrapped in a PVC (comes that way from crimestopper) between the metal of the key cylinder and the black plastic of the Honda antenna. there is a little lip there and its wrapped tight with a zip tie making the ring smaller. Does anybody have any tips on a better placement of the ring, or maybe the key needs to face a certain way in the box (grasping here)? Oh, and I'm using the gray head valet key in the box. frank, ive had problems with this same issue before . i realated it to the bypass unit. i use a dei bypass now with no problems. or even audiovox but here is how i fixed the unit you have. i removed the chip from the key. a little difficult given the hardness of the honda plastic. i slide a razor down the metal and rock back and forth un till i get a littlt way down. then i pull the plastic with pliers and keep cutting. if you do this becareful. this key has a silicon chip and will not work if you chip it. i taped the chip in the bypass and no more problems. i dont use those any more. they worked great on some vehicls and soso on others. \ XS

The problem with all those universal bypass modules is that the wire they provide is WAY to big to fit properly 4-5 times around a key cylinder to induce the signal. Just cut that fat wire off and use a smaller gauge wire instead and your problem is solved.

Two possible issues here:
--The loop around the keyhole has to be fairly small and tight.
Look at the key cylinder.....you have the metal area where the key inserts, and then a bit of black plastic around it.....and then it sort of "bumps in" to another "ledge" of black plastic that wouldn't be seen when the steering column is back together.....
The wire from your bypass ring MUST rest on that ledge, and you'll notice that the ring, as supplied, is very large.
Use a small zip tie, or a piece of tape, to make the loop smaller.
Put the small loop onto that ledge. If you want, throw a couple of pieces of tape on there----you don't have to be perfect with the tape.......it's just to hold it there until you get the column cover back on.
--SECOND ISSUE:
The Honda's valet key has an oversized head, the the transponder is situated low, toward the shaft.
Look at the bypass module, and note the loops of wire that go around the head of the key.
The LOWER part of the key's head, with the H on it, has to be directly under those loops of wire.
You can cut the "keyring loop" thing off of the key, and that'll take care of it, but I don't like hacking up people's keys.....
Just snap off part of the bypass box's plastic with pliers, and allow the keyring loop to stick out of the box........put a little tape on there so the key can't fall out, and when you tie the bypass box in place under the dash, tie it with the exposed part of the facing up, so it can't fall out even if the tape fails.
Also, as mentioned, the DEI 556U has an oversized box, and there is plenty of room to situate the key properly.

Thanks everybody for your input. I was wondering if I should order a 556u or just get the PKH4(X05) from bypasskit.com. I was wondering if anybody has used it yet? Does it work well? Any problems with it? I also might try cutting out some of the housing on the bypass kit I have now in the mean time, like Chris suggested. That will allow me to slide the key up a little, allowing the transponder to be better situated in the box. Again, thanks for all the help so far. Frank

I haven't seen that piece from Trilogix.
How does the cost compare to simply going to the Honda dealer and getting another key made? It is important for you to keep the valet key?

chris, are you saying that you use a key, wihtout breaking it in half? what if this car was stolen and the insurance recoverd it with a key in it? or the car burned and the key was found amongst the debris? i break every key, with lawyers these days, im taking no chances. ------------- expandable sound

You don't have to break a key. If your using a valet key that's programmed already, just cut the shaft off & if it's a new key , don't get it cut. ------------- Jeff

It was intorduced last December and not exactly a cheap peice to get either. Good for now until they make a less expensive alternative. ------------- Jeff

Most of the work I do is for new-car dealerships.
Even if I explain the deal with cutting the shaft of the key to managers, salespeople, or both......it's a volatile business and people move from dealership to dealership quite often.
If a situation arises where all of the car's keys need to be reprogrammed, and one of them has been cut up, someone cries.
If they don't know the tricks to program a key that's been cut/broken, someone has to pay for a new key to be made......whether it be the dealership, or the car's owner.
So, it kind of goes into the category of "no good deed goes unpunished." But I'll happily do it if asked.
