Can anyone confirm whether or not a 92 Lumina sedan has the VATS security in it? I have read conflicting reports, and the key for the vehicle does NOT have a visible "chip" in it. Also, no lights on dash indicate it would....???

Thanks,
Brian

if there is not a black pellet on the steel part of the key...then it does not have a vats.

My information leads me to find the tach wire on the coil pack... I can see the coils in the front of the engine. There are 3 packs with two spark plug wires from each. Also there is a connector on either side of the "coil pack". The wire I'm looking for is WHITE? I do not see a white wire on either connector.
Is this the correct "coil pack" area?

yes thats the area...but you could also use a fuel injector wire.

I can see the brake switch from the pedal on this 92 Lumina. The switch has a hose coming from it, and going towards the passenger side. There are no wires that are visible. Does anyone know if the wires run through this black rubber hose? Or is it some sort of air pressure switch?? I have seen information that it is easier to connect on passenger side (green wire running towards rear of car,) but I can not find that wire either!!
Any suggestions?

Thanks again,
Brian

So, there should be a single white wire from that area, or one of the two connectors will have a white wire?
I have installed on a cavalier, and a sunbird, and the tach wires were obvious -- but this one is not!

Are you saying a white wire in the passenger kick panel area that runs towards rear of car? Do you know where that pneumatic switch actually is? I can only see the hose running upwards towards window, and behind stereo area.

Thanks again,
Brian

On your coil pack there is one white wire which is the tach wire. Look a little closer and you may have to clean the wires to see them clearly. The brake switch is on the same bracket that holds the switch with the rubber vacuum hose on it. The hose is for the cruise control. There is a separate switch which probably has an orange, white and light blue wire in it. The white wire in this switch is the brake circuit you need.

Hey Sparkie,
Thanks a lot. I will look closer for the brake switch for sure. The tach wire now: I found a violet/white wire and hooked my meter to it. I have a frequency meter, and it does have a frequency generated that increases as idle increases. I have seen some "diagrams" that claim the tach wire is indeed violet and white. Could it be this wire?

I've used the violet white on these cars. Is it a 3.8L v-6?

It is a 3.1L V6.

I found the brake switch (finally!) but the wire really is hard to reach. Have you found an easier place to connect to it?

Thanks!

No,  none that I can remember.

Should be able to get it in the actual column wiring plug.... white wire. Older GM (and some Dodges) use the turn signal filaments in the rear bulbs as brake lights. The brake signal passes through the turn signal cancelling ring in the column.

As far as tach goes..... much much easier to get an injector wire on the top of the motor. It will be the non pink on the injector.

I usually just unplug the brake switch plug and pull it down enough to tap the wire. You may be able to do as gus1 suggested and get it in the harness that runs to the turn signal switch. Test the wire first as there may be more than one white wire. You may also be able to find either a white or light blue wire in the harness that runs down the driver's side of the car under the carpet. I'm not sure as I have never looked for it there. As for the tach wire, PURPLE / white may work. Use a volt meter set to an A/C voltage scale and measure ffrom a good ground to the wire with the engine running. You should get a reading between 1 and 9 volts varying with RPM. On some
GM engines, connecting to this wire can cause the engine to be limited in it's RPM rate and cause engine problems at higher speed.

Thanks for the info...
The violet/white wire is actually listed on some wire diagrams as the tach, while others say it is a white wire. I used this one, because there are TWO white wires from the coil pack; would they both be tach? As I said, I measured a frequency from this wire which varied with engine speed. I hope it will be okay at high speed driving! (at least I have a heads up--can always cut it on the highway!)

Thanks again,
Brian
