Subject: check engine light after 2 days?
Date Posted: January 02, 2003 at 12:06 PM

I installed a Bulldog remote starter (RS102) and everything was working fine except the range (100ft).  Today, two days after install, I had went to the store and upon remote starting, I got a check engine light.  This is in a 98 Durango and It runs like new.  How do I determine if the light is from the remote starter or some other issue.  I followed the wireing diagram from bulldog and the install went fairly smooth.  My guess without checking would be a fuse but it shouldn't be one from the remote else it wouldn't work?  Dont' know please help!  By the way, I didn't install the relays for the lock/unlock and I don't have a transponder keyless entry.   Thanks in advance     Dan

There were two ACC wires that needed to be powered up. Did you get both of them ?

there was only 1 listed on the bulldog site....that was the blk/org.

the #2 ignition wire (dk grn/red) was of very small gauge though...thought this might cause me a problem. this was the only wire that was located in a different cluster of wired in the steering column. The main cluster with the other wires was taped seperate from this set but taped next to it. Don't know if this helps.

WIRE COLOR LOCATION
12 VOLTS CONSTANT RED IGN HARNESS
IGNITION 1 D BLU IGN HARNESS
IGNITION 2 DK/GRN/RED IGN HARNESS
IGNITION 3 IGN HARNESS
ACCESSORY /HEATER BLOWER 1 BLK/ORG IGN HARNESS
ACCESSORY /HEATER BLOWER 2 IGN HARNESS
STARTER YEL IGN HARNESS
PARKING LIGHTS BLK/YEL AT HEADLIGHT SWITCH
DOMELIGHT YEL (-) AT COURTESY LIGHT UNDER DASH
PWR DOOR LOCK ORG/VIO 16 PINN CONN BELOW DR FUSE BLOCK
PWR DOOR UNLOCK PNK/VIO 16 PINN CONN BELOW DR FUSE BLOCK (TYPE C)
TRUNK RELEASE
TACH SENSOR BLK/GRY IGN COIL
BRAKE WHT/TAN AT SWITCH ABOVE BRAKE PEDAL
HORN BLK/RED (-) STEER COLM
FACTORY DISARM L GRN/ORG 16 PIN CONN BELOW DR FUSE BLOCK
PLEASE NOTE: If the last line in the above chart contains an entry - FACTORY ANTI THEFT and its value is Passlock1, Passlock2, Vats or Transponder, you have to buy the bypass module 791. Please click here - Part 791

Thanks Dan

edit: wouldn't I have had this problem immediately if the wires were not connected corectly? Also I checked to see what the code for the check engine light was but it did not give one.

you need to power up the GREEN/ red it is the trans control module power wire. split it with ignition 2 it must see ign thru crank cycle.

If your telling me to connect the dk grn/red wire to the ignition #2 wire of the remote starter, I had done that.  all I mentioned was that the wire gauge seems small in comparrison to the others.  Sorry bout the confusion.  If you didn't mean what I thought, then please explain....new at this install thing.  Thanks for the reply.

Ok .....so I need to change a couple wires around.  From what I see here, I have to take the second ignition wire from the unit off of the GREEN/ red wire located in the steering column and from the Bulldog manual, I can connect this to the secondary acc wire (blk/white) in the steering column.  Or should I tie the two acc wires to the one acc wire on the unit and tape off the secondary ignition wire.

By the way....the check engine light went out today and there are no fault codes.

Thanks for the help.  Dan

Dan, do not attach two wires that are separate together... this is not an accepted practice as this could cause problems in the future. Relay isolate the ACC wire.
