Testing on the ignition wires

Hi,
Anyone out there can teach me how to test the ignition wires. Example wire for start, on and Acc? Please help... 100 thanks

What kind of vehicle is it?

depending on the car. wires are going to be all different in color. so get your diagram for the specific car your working on and get access to the ign. harness located along the steering colunm. a digital multi meter is in order. but as long as your doing ign. wires you can use a test light. first for the acc. wire it will show voltage while in the acc. but not during crank(start). the start wire will be oppisite no voltage in acc. than you may need a wire that will carry voltage in acc. and during crank. that wire will show voltage all the time. other than off. hopefully that helped. but to totaly understand you need hands on. so get to it and just remember to check all wires and connections before you commit to anything. good luck

Use a 12 volt digital meter to check all wires to confirm any wiring info. Most vehicles have one or two battery wires to them. They will show 12 volts on them at all times. An ignition wire will show 12 volts when the the key is turned to igntion and will have 12 volts during crank/start and after crank/run position. They won't have 12 volts in the accessory postion. A true second ignition will have 12 volts in the igntion and run position but will show zero volts during crank. It will not have power in the accessory postion. This is usually for the climate controls. The accessory wire is not usually used on most vehicles, but there are exceptions. They are sometimes used to power up other modules which won't impede the car from starting but may cause other problems or trouble codes. There may be more than one of each type of circuit depending on the vehicle.   Some new Chrysler vehicles use multiplexing on ignition wires and depend on different resistances to ground for different key positions on one or more wires.

Thanks for all information but still not right to the point.

1.Acc always 12 volt? only when turn the key which will tell the alarm the car is on.

2.When the key to on than 12 volt will solve on multimeter right. If key is not turn to on there will be no voltage.

3.When key turn to on. no voltage on all wire? Thats the part I cannot understand. Please enlighten me.
