They work fine, but you only get the range that the alarm has.  I am not familiar with the range of you alarm, but typically you are not going to get as good of a range since the alarm is not needed at great range.  Most add-ons have a trigger wire that you usually use your lock wire to pulse to trigger the remote starter.  For example you can program it so when the locjk button is pressed three times quickly it will trigger the starter. You will not necessarily need the viper diagram, but will need a vehicle wire diagram which will direct you to all the wires you need to install.  Depending on the unit you buy and how your alarm functions you may need to disarm your aftermarket alarm so that the alarm does not trigger.

In my girlfriend's car, I installed an old Viper 500PC alarm, and a 551R remote start, only because I got them for free.  Anyway, I simply programmed one remote to operate both units---it all works seamlessly, and she has the full range of the long-range antenna on the 551R.
