i have a 2001 oldsmobile alero that won't start it turns over , but just won't start i was told by a very friendly guy at the dealership it was because of the passlock anti theft system , but that is all he was able to tell me .is there a way to disable or reset this without having to pay  $400

Sorry but no one is going to give you that info as it can be use to steal any gm car equipped with passlock.

Try turning the key to crank and then let the key sit in the on position for about 10 - 12 mins. The security light on the dash should flash during the wait time. When the light goes out, turn the key off and then try restarting the car. If it fails to start then you will likely need to get it towed in to fix the problem. Try taking to someone who hasn't prejudged the problem. Saying that it will cost $400 before even looking at it is ridiculous. Ask them to show you their crystal ball that they looked at to figure out the problem.

It could be just replacing the ignition switch itself which is a do it yourself job if you can get a new switch(lock and cyclinder) and keys or keys.  The ignition shouldn't be that much.  The labor is ususally what hits you over the head.

find the ignition wire that leads from the key switch to the starter; it is spliced to a relay that will not allow you to start. Remove the relay in between this and hook the two wires to make them together again. Maybe this should work???????
