Hi I have a 94 Formula that I bought used in 97 that came with an Avital alarm system with keyless entry. I have had a lot of problems with my battery dying when my car sits for a few days and I've basically narrowed it down to this system draining the battery. It has a light that either blinks or is on steady all the time. How do I disconnect this system so that I don't have to worry that I'm going to run to the store and come out to a dead car? I enjoyed having the security but not at the cost of reliability.

Not sure what model the alarm is, if there is a place I can look and that will help with disconnecting let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Lesli

Hi Lesli,

Fellow Formula fan here.

Removing it should not be too difficult, unless the alarm install was well-hidden. But, once you find the alarm, you might want to use a multimeter and check it for current draw-----to make sure that it is (or isn't) the cause of your battery drain.

1. You have to locate the alarm brain, the main black box that controls everything. Here are some good ways to do it.

A. Make the alarm go off, and listen for clicking under the dash......the alarm brain will make clicking sounds as it flashes the car's parking lights on and off.
B. Follow the wires from the backside of the LED light, or siren, or valet switch, and see where they go.

2. Once you find the alarm brain, it is probably held in place by zip-ties, screws, or both. Unfasten it and let it hang down.

3. Find the 5-amp fuse, and remove it---this will disable the alarm. You might want to put a multimeter to the two fuse terminals, and test for current draw.
(You will also see a white wire, with a 10-amp fuse, but that is just for the parking light flasher.)

4. Follow all of the wires from the alarm, see where they go, and disconnect them from the car's wiring. Be sure to tape up the car's wires well, to avoid future problems.

In most cases, the wires from the alarm will simply be spliced into the car's wiring----just disconnect them by cutting, or undo the tape and unravel the alarm's wire.

The one exception is the car's starter wire-------to install the starter kill feature, the installer would have cut the Pontiac's thick yellow starter wire in half, connecting each half to the Avital's starter-kill relay.

Cut the relay away, and connect the Pontiac's yellow starter wire back together. Be sure to do a good job, because if this connection comes loose, the car will not start.

Thanks this is such great info! I will see what I can do, I have a friend coming over who installed his own alarm so maybe I can give this to him and he can find what needs to be done.  I don't have a multimeter unfortunately but I'm going on some other thigns I've read where others who had Avital had issues with battery drain. No one had been able to find anything else wrong with the car so the trial and error process begins. I love this car, it's my baby, so whatever it takes to get it back in good working order.

Only thing I don't like is possibly losing my keyless entry....it's been real handy. I may just need to get a new alarm or something.
