Here is a weird one. 2002 Caravan using an Avital 4200.

Everything works fine when the engine is hot. When cold, the car won’t start. Starter engages and turns over it just doesn’t start. Will start any time, hot or cold, using the key.

Once the engine is hot it will start most, but not all, times with the remote.

I downloaded the manual and searched this site. Totally baffled. Where should I be looking?

I am gonna assume you are using the 555c as your remote start bypass. And when you say "hot" or "cold" imma assume your talking about the outside weather

when it gets cold, the pellet has a horrible time sending the code. (common problem)
This also happens with the 555f.

Try positioning the pellet closer.

If this isnt the problem, remote start and let it fail.
Then read the LED to see wat the problem is.

There is s second starter wire that has to be connected. Any chance this part might have been over looked?

Second Starter PURPLE / brown   -   ignition harness

Notes: The second starter wire is negative trigger thru a 180 ohm resistor. MUST use relay. Refer to directfax document #1083 for wiring information.

Captainzab

This car has a black key so I didn’t use a 555c.  When I say hot and cold I am referring to the engine operating temperature. When it is at operating temp the RS works most times. When cold the vehicle won’t start – Kind of defeats the purpose of having a RS. I’ll give the diag led a try and post the results.

Got the second wire correct thru a 180 ohm and relay. It does work sometimes. As far as I can tell I have a good install – obviously I don’t.

I’m totally stumped.

Thanks much to both of you for responding, I post again if I can spot something else.

Note I am 12volt boy, not 12voltman and there is a reason for that. lol

Read the LED. Im thinking its gonna show 1 or 3.
1 meaning that it just doesnt work, and probably because of wiring.
3 meaning not a good tach. try volt sense. or vice versa.

Have you gone further in details of your test that this second starter wire is working probably? Are you absoulely sure it is working corectly? This is the difference between starting when it is warm and not starting when it is cold. If this isn't working like it should. That might be your problem.

I would check over that PITA second starter wire make sure it is activating and sending the right resistance then I would check the tach next...When the car is cold and you crank it with the key, not the autostart,is it hard to turn over? I always compare with the key and with the autostart..

Whooo  hooo

Guys I can’t thank you enough. This is my third install so I know just enough to cause trouble. Turns out I forgot to wire a positive to the coil of the second wire relay so it wasn’t firing.

I had this thing in for a while and kind of gave up until I found this site. I had spent some time in the wrong area fooling with the tach wire and volt sense.

You guys put me on the right track immediately. Very impressive. After searching around here and learning a little more I understood enough to properly trouble shoot the install.

This is really a great site. Hope I can pass some good on one day.
