Starter going when key is turned to on?

Installing a remote start in my 01 QX4, and now when I turn the key to the on position, the starter begins to crank. Ideas to what might be causing this?

I would double check the wires that you interrupted for the starter kill and also the ignition wire as well.

double checked the wires and the connections appear correct. Seems like the starter is being energized with key to the on position.

ok, just did another check, and the purple starter wire from the viper 160xv rs is putting out 12v constant. This is with no key in the ignition. This wire shouldn't have constant voltage correct? Do I have a bad system?

The green wire must be connected to constant +12 volts which it should not be.

check to see if the small purple wire (- crank relay activation wire) is grounded or shorted to ground... this will give you this problem as it will "turn on" the crank relay..... i had the same problem a while back and it was the 2nd starter - activation wire i used for the 2nd starter relay... it had 12v on it all the time and as soon as the key was turned to ign the vehicle would start.... i used the second status output instead and all was good.... it would help if we knew exactly what brand and model of unit you are dealing with..... ------------- Kevin Gerry

I'm installing the viper 160xv. The problem is, its the xcrs relay pack that seems to be the problem. I took out the 2nd ignition relay, and still had the constant voltage on the heavey gauge green and purple start wires. I then tried a different relay pack from my wifes car and the problem went away. So know I need to find somewhere to buy the xcrs relay, as DEI won't deal with me personally. Since this was an ebay purchase, I have no authorized dealer to turn to.

bang on it... ( the relay pack) i've heard they had some problemns with the relays sticking.....

Really....those teenie tiny little "high current" relays get stuck....I have always wondered about them little suckers....Why can't ALL manufacturers make stuff that small, it would be an easier install....I think? Try opening the starter wire with a relay, and trigger it with "ground while running" Some Nissans can get feedback to the starter wire that causes your exact problem. 85 trigger GWR 86 12volts fused 87a starter wire "car side" 30starter wire "key side" Cut you starter wire on the key side of the remote start wire connection. do you copy? over!

I figured this was a long shot, but whacked it around a bit... IT WORKED!
Either that or its broken.  I haven't had a chance to test out everything yet, but this did resolve the voltage problem.

not that that's a valid fix... i would still recommend replacing it... but it'll fix the problem in the short term....
