I'm trapped in Wyoming!! My 2006 Dodge Ram Diesel won't start, it's Sunday and all the dealers and repair shops are closed. After a brief stop, the starter will not engage. I believe the problem to be electronic, perhaps the neutral bypass safety switch or other relay. All power systems appear to be okay, strong battery, attempted start in Park, neutral and all other auto gear selections. I've checked all fuses and even tapped on the starter while attempting to crank... nothing. I believe if I can crank the engine, it will start and I can keep it running for the 400+ mile drive home and turn it over to my dealer on Monday.

Is there a way to bypass the ignition (i.e., power straight to the starter), to get this thing started without blowing a major electronic part or frying the computer or something? I have a 7-year old that needs to get home and I'm desperate.

You might end up causing more problems, than solutions. And the stealership ain't gonna like it either.

The ignition/starter system in your truck uses a series of wires, thru resistors and such. It's NOT just energize the starter wire.

You have internet access....I would send for a tow truck, I don't believe you'll be able to do this in the field posted_image

if its standard pull start it try holding key in start position to energize other circuit the start wire engergizes

Well, jumping the starter didn't work. Had it towed to the dealer on Monday and they had to reinstall the computer operating program but all historical faults were lost. They found nothing else. At least it got me home.

My concern is, "what caused the computer to crash?" My local dealer found the shift cable "slightly" out of adjustment and believes this could have kept the neutral safety bypass from completing the circuit. Thanks for the input. Rocky
