I am trying to install a remote starter on my friend's Silverado. How ever before I can perform the remote starter the alarm needs to learn the tach wire.

I have located two wires at the ignition coil: Red and White

The white wire is suppose to be the tach wire but every time I try to program the tach wire to the alarm it does not accept it.

Got any idea why?

i have a 92 sounds like you have the right wire. I was told to solder this connects to make sure it was a good connection.

And just my .02 on the tach learning, i installed one and did the tach learning, but ended up going with voltage, it was more reliable on my truck.

White, white, white.....Theres even one there taped up near the coil with a female spade (factory test connector) you can plug into. Rich

If you have to toggle switches to put in program mode try doing a little slower.

I am using that female spade connector to connect to the alarm.

However when I read the voltage on that wire with the truck running, I get a (+) signal. That wire is suppose to be (-) signal.

The tach signal off the coil is an AC signal. Set meter to AC 10 volt scale. Try unplugging your brain and plugging back in, make sure your ground is good. What brand starter are you using. Rich.

I am using a Prestige APS-996 alarm. I am currently using the white (tach) wire but the alarm still cannot learn it.

Can someone list the factory ignition color code for me so I can verify that I am using the correct wires?

Try a PURPLE / WHITE wire otherwise go to an injector ( uncommon colored one )

+12V - Power
Ign - Pink
Heater (accy) - orange
Starter - yellow or purple

As Jeff said it try the Violet \ white at the distributor, I did one last week and had problems trying to programm the whit wire. The Violet \ White worked perfect. test wires.
