I have just bought a 2004 nissan xterra, it has a passive alarm instaled, the other day i opened the hood and saw a sticker that said: "this vehicle has a remote car starter installed please diconect when servicing"
now how do i find out how to work the car starter if it is in fact installed? i tried a few things with the factory key fob but nothing works, maybe some one can tell me how to may identify the brand of alarm, identifiy the car starter itself or maybe some key fob things i could try, the dealer apaintly had no idea because they never said anything about it before i baought it so. Please help.
Thanks
Tommy

Try describing the remote, or better yet post a picture of it here....

Frequently, car dealerships pull out all aftermarket product......they don't want to get stuck having to replace it under warranty. It is entirely possible that you have the sticker, but no remote start.
Is there any kind of non-factory looking object stuck onto the top of the windshield? Usually the antenna is placed there.
Also, take a peek under the dash, or in the fusebox....... any toggle or pushbuttons switches there?

If there is not an antenna on the window, I would try hitting lock several times in a row. One way some systems operate is if you press lock 2 or 3 times quickly it will activate the remote starter. I have seen some that work with unlock as well, but most with lock.
Hopefully this helps, if not...do as Mike has suggested and a better description would help.
Keep us posted.

Chances are it's not there... 90% of dealer ships pull them out as stated above....if there is only a factory remote... forget it... it's probably gone...

Like twelvoltz said, try messing around with the factory remote.....I know you said you already tried, but.......... try hitting Lock twice........ or Lock three times...... or Lock, Unlock, Lock.
Try all of that with that valet switch in both positions......it should be in the "on" position, but sometimes the "on/off" label thingy gets installed wrong.....so definitely try it both ways.
As far as the antenna, sometimes it's a small black box with a thin rod coming out......sometimes a narrow, longish black box with no rod.........in any case, adhered to the top-center, or top-left of the windshield with double-stick tape.
You could go on ebay, to a search for "remote start", and look at some of the pictures as examples.
A couple of other ideas:
---That valet switch you found......can you get yourself behind that panel, follow the wires from the switch, and see where they go?
---Another thing you could probably check for yourself, without tools is this:
One thing necessary for installing a remote start is to connect to the car's brake-light wire.....sometimes the installer will find the brake-light wire under the carpet, running toward the rear of the car.........but also very frequently, he'll simply go to the little switch mounted on the brake pedal.
I believe the under-dash of the Xterra is fairly open. Get under there with a flashlight, and look above the brake pedal.......you'll see two switches attached to the brake pedal.......one is for brake lights; the other is for cancelling the cruise control.
Look for signs of where the installer would have added his aftermarket wire to the factory brake light switch. Try to determine if the wire is still there, and if it's going someplace.......or if the wire has been cut short and re-taped.
While you're under there, look for anything non-factory, such as black boxes zip-tied in place rather than screwed.
Also, look for non-factory wires running through the firewall into the engine compartment, connected to the engine.
