I believe what you are talking about is an Immobilizer bypass module.  This is used with remote start.  This will bypass the immobilizer to allow the remote start unit to start without the key being in the ignition.  The common uses are to bypass a system like passlock in a chevy vehicle.  A factory security interface is also available and needed for vehicles like a grand cherokee or some new chevy vehicles.  This type of module is neccesary ( or at least easier to use ) to integrate your alarm to the factory accessories such as locks, door triggers and in some instances factory security.  It all depends on what type of vehicle you are installing an alarm in as to what type of module you might need.
