Subject: 1998 BMW 528i Remote Start, Any tips?

I'm getting ready to install an AstroStart 2205 into a 1998 BMW 528i this Saturday. I am very experienced in remote start installations, just not in BMW's. Been installing professionally now for about 6 years, but in ND, not so many Bimmers up here. I have never done a BMW yet, so I'm wondering what kind of things I should be aware of. Something needs to be done obviously about the key bypass, but what exactly? I think i can go into the driver's door for the locks and factory security...correct? The other things seem to be straight forward, but with any vehicle, there are those little secrets that only certain installers know just out of habit and repetitive exposure. Any advice and/or opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Dallas

cars very easy, just a pain to get everything apart. I used an old 555B i had, but you can use the 556u, you cant just wrap the ring around cyclinder, you have to cut into the factory immobilzer wires. This will ensure a correct start EVERY time. The only prob. I had was getting the damn driver door off. If fact I couldn't, but it comes off enough from the bottom in order to get your hands in there and feed the wires from the window mod (thats where the locks are)back down to the door boot. Besides that its a pretty easy car. Make sure you use the 556U though. I used the plastic valet key and had to tape it up to the spot where you put the key in the bypass. Also make sure you have the correct doc. for the parking lights. They trigger when the wire is cut. And yes you have to use single pulse on unlock wire in order to disarm factory sec. But this will leave the drivers door unlocked. Just set the brain for ign locks on.

Thanks for all the info. I wasn't aware of the Parking Lights and having to break the wire with a relay. I have a BMW bypass module for the key from AstroFlex, so hopefully that works out! I appreciate the replies!

For the parking lights, you can also use 6amp diodes instead. This makes for a much cleaner/easier installation since you don't have two relays to wire. These diodes are available at Radioshack.

Also, DO NOT come anywhere near this car with a test light. ALWAYS use a digital multimeter or computer safe test light.

556U works fine...the instructions that come with the 556U explains how to install into European cars. All a 555B is a 556U with the antenna cut from the wire harness.
