Subject: How to arm alarm with engine running
Date Posted: December 06, 2006 at 11:01 PM

hi everyone. I am just an amateur with car alarms and I have the following question. How can I hook up the alarm in order for it to be able to arm while the engine is running? I am trying to use a separate turbo timer and I would like to arm the alarm when I leave the car and the timer  my counting down.  Btw my alarm is a healthy 10 + year old Viper 300. It's got the regular hookup w/ starter kill relay.

Thanks in advance if anyone can explain what to do.

why do u you need the alarm to go of while driving!
if you are trying to make noise on the street try holding panic button while driving.

I am not trying to make any noise. I just want to be able to arm the alarm when my turbo timer is counting down and engine is running. This way I can get out of the car and arm the car while engine is still running under the turbo timer countdown.

the alarm system uses the ignition wire for that when the ignition is on it wont arm. you would have to use a swith on that wire. u cant disconect it completly because its needed for programing or passive door locks.
try disconecting the wire and using the alarm while car the car is on.

you may run into issues with your shock sensor as the car is running. Vibration may set off your alarm. Are there any extra out puts on the alarm you could use to build a relay to disable the sensor.

i know the ultra alarms you cant have run then arm it because the ignition wire will shut it off. with a remote start and alarm you can have it arm while running...

I will try taking off the ignition wire to see happens. and i do have extra outputs from the alarm although i dont think the vibration from the car will set the alarm off. if it does, i will turn the sensor sensitivity down.

Set it up for passive arming.  When the turbo timer shuts the car off it will lock and arm itself.

i know the starter/alarm units shut the shock sensor off when u remote start...

It is already set for passive arming. But still the alarm would not arm itself after the turbo timer shuts off the car. This is because the alarm needs at least one door to open and close before it can count down for passive arming.

Ok, I have inatall several Turbo Timer with alarms.  Get a 10 amp diode and cut the ignition wire thats come from the ignition switch and hook there the 10 amp diode.  Then conect the wire from the alarm between the ignition switch and the diode and the wire that comes from the Turbo timer after the diode.

Hope you undertand my explication.

Good luck,

Isaac

Thanks for your advice.
I was able to make it work but with a different approach. I disconnected the ignition wire from the alarm and was able to arm it with engine running. Although doing it like this,  I was not able to reset the intermittenly flashing LED (after setting the alarm off) /memory . So I connected another ACC wire to this ignition wire and it solved the problem. This ACC wire only provides power when key is in and turned to ACC. It does not provide power when key is out and turbo timer counting down with engine on.

You can use a 10 AMP or higer value diode.  You can but the diode in Radio Shack.  10 AMP or higer Diodes are incased in metal and does not look like the regular black ones.
