Hi there , I was wondering how you guys install a viper 550 remote start on the 2001 celica GTS.

I was told you have to be careful  with the ignition wires when tapping into  it or you may fry the computer of the car

How would you setup this install

Thanx

This holds true for any vehicle made. Be careful what you are stripping and always use a DMM. Here is the wiring diagram for the car and double check all connections prior to soldering them to ensure proper connections:

Notes:
*1 When doing remote start, this wire must be isolated from the keyswitch with the ignition relay. See direct fax document #1077.      *2 The BCM is located just to the right side of the radio.  Remove the radio to access.  *3 To avoid dome light delay, use RED / yellow at the driver door pin for the driver door and red at the passenger door pin for the passenger door.  Isolate each door trigger with diodes.  *4 There are 2 blue/red wires in the ignition harness. The correct ignition wire is the heavier gauge one and it has 1 silver hash mark. The incorrect wire has 2 silver hash marks.

I've done a lot of Celicas; here are some extra tips:

Door trigger:  High up above the driver's kick panel, you'll see a thin harness running up to the driver's A-pillar.  RED / white catches all the doors, but it does read the domelight delay.  DEI units make an extra chirp when they sese the domelight staying on, but this feature can easily be turned off in the programming menu.

Also, you'll note that there are no wire harnesses running down the doorsill on either side.......ALL of the wires going to the rear are run down the center of the car.  You can get them by pulling up the center console trim, but access is rather difficult.

Parking lights:  I've always gotten them negative at the column just because it's so easy do to so.....but a co-worker of mine always gets positive lights, green wire, in a harness going by the ashtray.  He says he's done many Celicas this way with no comebacks.

Relay-isolation on BLACK/ orange second ignition wire:  In many cases, this doesn't appear to be even necessary.......but on some cars, I've observed that when you remote start the car, and then insert and turn the key to drive off, the starter grinds for a moment.  But it's not hard to use the DEI setup to isolate..........

Cut the BLACK/ orange in half.  Pink/white from the DEI relay pack goes to the car side.  You'll notice an empty slot in the relay; insert a new pin in here, and tie this new wire to the car side of the ORANGE / black.

The gray accessory wire powers the radio, and is entirely unnecessary for remote start.

The brown lock wire can be had in the driver's kick.  There's also a wire in the driver's kick that'll give two-stage unlocking, but I forget the color---you'll have to test for it.  In all cases, these wires test by operating the key in the door, NOT by the rocker switch on the center console.

The engine compartment is pretty tight.  The only spot I've been able to do a siren easily, is the back edge of the passenger side strut tower, near the AC lines there.  You can bend the lines just a little to make room.

Ok, so you tell me to cut the BLACK/ orange wire in half and wired with the pink/white wire .  Then what about the second ignition wire blue/red,  and the pink wire from the remote start relay, where do I wired that wire to?

I thought the pink/white wire are supposed to wire to the second ignition which is to the blue/red

So confused, please help , what ignition goes to what?

Yes, my mistake for getting it backward........ but also, "ignition 1" and "ignition 2" are just used so we both agree what we're talking about......

Imagine if I come over your house and find two hats in your closet.  And then I decide that from now on, we're to call your brown hat "hat 1," and your yellow hat "hat 2".......... .. whoever researched that first Celica just found two ignition wires, and made up some designations for them.

Also, if you look at the wires going into the DEI relay pack, you can see that the pink relay and the pink/white relay have the exact same function....... the wires are just jumpered together.

But back to where we were...... to keep things clear, we'll just follow the rules and agree that DEI's ignition 1 goes to Toyota's ignition 1.  That was my mistake for getting it mixed up.

Use the pink Ignition 1 wire, tied to the Toyota's BLACK/ orange Ignition 1 wire, and do the special interface mentioned above.

Tie the pink/white Ignition 2 wire directly to the Toyota's blue/red wire, in the normal way.
