Subject: Remote starter, 2 ignition wires?
Date Posted: December 14, 2006 at 3:37 PM
I am installing a remote starter (Prostart ct-3100) on my 2000 Dodge Dakota. The truck has 2 ignition wires, but the remote starter only has one to use. I know that I need to connect to both ignition wires, but am not too familiar with the best way to do this, or how and where to make connections etc. For what it's worth, with everything hooked up except the 2nd ignition wire, I can remote start the truck, but it immediately shuts off (engine cranks and starts, but stops within 1-2 seconds). Can anyone provide me with some assistance? Thanks!

you need 2 relays to hook up the ignition

Thanks mobilecustoms. I have very little knowledge of relays and how to hook them up and use them, or even what to buy and where to get them, let alone where to put them.... I will have to do my research and learn about all of this... could you point me towards a website or resource that I could use to read up on this? I have read through the basic info on this site, but am looking for more of a "relays for dummies" manual I guess...

The Key is black, so I don't think I have any issues there. Thanks for the help, looks like I'll have to figure out how to use relays to get this working. Appreciate the replies.

You need a relay wired like this.
Pins 86 and 87 fused 12 volt constant
Pin 30 2nd ignition wire in vehicle
Pin 85 Ground out when running wire from your Prostart module

Where do I connect the first ignition wire? It sounds like I need another relay, but I don't know how and where that would hook up...

Can anyone take a look at this and let me know if it will work, or if I am completely missing it... Relay #1: 86-connected to ignition wire from remote starter 87-connected to 12v constant 85-to 2nd relay (86) 30-to ignition 1 in vehicle Relay #2: 86-from 1st relay 87-connected to 12v constant 85-ground 30-to ignition 2 in vehicle

Hook the ignition wire from your rs to the first ignition wire in your truck. Use a relay wired like my previous post and connect it to your vehicles second ignition wire. Do you have the tach wire hooked up and learned by the rs unit?

Awesome, thanks alot bbtaco! That makes sense, I was under the impression that I needed 2 relays, and was trying to figure that out. But I see what you have described, perfect... Final question, just want to make sure of this: can I just tie in the 12v constants to the power wires (fused) at the ignition harness? Thanks again, this has been a great help!

That should be fine. You can connect the 12 volt constant wires going to the relay together and use one fuse.Make sure you use large enough gauge wires. I use 14 ga. wire.

ok.... So I set up the relay as bbtaco described, but it did not work. With the relay connected, my radio immediately turns on, and the remote starter still does not work... it will crank and start, but immediately the engine will stop. I'm sure I have some wires wrong here, what does it look like I've done?

"Pin 85 Ground out when running wire from your Prostart module" I just grounded Pin 85 to a metal surface, is this correct? I don't understand what "running wire from your prostart module" means...

no you cannot ground pin 85 to a metal surface. the relay will always be activated.. on the the multi wire plug you will see a whit wire.. I believe it is pin 10 (Ground when running).. that is where you should be connecting pin 85 to..
