programming an uncut key

Is it possible to program an uncut PATS key (that won't fit in the ignition)? I'm thinking I could unscrew the PATS module from the ignition switch and pull it off for the programming of the new key part - i.e. have it on the ignition for the first two original keys, then pull it off, hold the new key in the loop away from the ignition, and turn the ignition to 'ON' using one of the original keys....


Thoughts?

I think ya have to ground the keysense and jump the ign wires hold the new key up to the barrel.. or it will come up with an invalid key code

You can install the remote starter system, program it for diesel delay or ground out wait to start wire. either way, when you remote start it, it will power up ignition long enough for the key to program. Then program like normal. insert 1st key, turn on and wait for theft light to go out. insert 2nd key turn on and wait for theft light to go out. then put uncut unprogrammed key in ignition, remote start wait for theft light to go out AND WAIT FOR IT TO CRANK. I had a windstar that at the exact second it cranked I shut it down and it screwed up the programming and caused other keys to intermittently work. I had to get it started and drive to dealer, clear all keys and reprogram all keys. pita

you can do this with all transponder keys btw

Thanks, but the problem is that the key won't go into the ignition! I ordered the key from eBay - it is a PATS key, but is somewhat longer and possibly thicker than the original. I had Ford cut it, and it works in the doors, but only goes about half way into the ignition cylinder. Rather than taking a chance screwing up my ignition key cylinder, I'm trying to figure out a way to get around it....

i am willing to bet it is the wrong key. i use uncut keys only for bypass modules and they go into the cylinder. but if ur sure it is the same what u want to do is make a tool. it's really easy to make take a 10g fuse holder cut the loop solder a alagator clip on one end and tin the other put in 30 amp fuse. what u want to do is clip the one end on ur power wire. put the first 2 keys threw then put the black end of the 3rd key to the cylinder and touch the other end of the power wire to the ignition and wait for the light, works easy...

I think your idea should work fine. The only problem might be time, there is a limit to how long you can wait. Your gonna have to have the Pats ring ready to go when it comes time for the third key...

Thanks for all your input, I got it working. Two more minutes of thought on my idea and it all came clear.....pull the PATS module off the ignition cylinder. hold key 1 in the PATS module ring, use key 2 to turn the ignition to on then off. Then put key 2 in the PATS module ring and turn the engine to on then off with key 1. Then hold the new uncut key in the PATS module ring while turning the engine to on then off with either key 1 or 2.

So, for those winstalling remote starters, no need to get the key cut (and leave a valid key in the vehicle for theives to use ;)

u can also go to bulldogsecurity.com and they give step by step instructions as to what type of system ie.. vats, passlock.. they also sell the blank keys there too.

yeah, dolhop, most of us will program a key and then actually cut it, so know 1 can use it to start the vehicle
