We have been pulling the airbag fuse thinking we were disarming the airbags(so kids or dogs could sit in front when needed). 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. 15 amp fuse

The system is not disarmed with merely pulling the fuse. The system has a built in capacitance that will allow it to go off.

Without taking it all out I dont think there really is a way to disarm it completely. Not to mention its illegal.

I think a scan tool will be able to disable it for "diagnostic" purposes, but your bag light will stay on and it'll cost ya about 85 bucks if you can get someone to do it.. Liability ya know...

Not to mention that your insurance agency would have an absolute fit if you got into an accident and found out you disabled it. Kids and the Dogs may have to ride in the back seat...

I'm not 100% on this, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the capacitance in an airbag system only hangs around for a few minutes at most. This is why often in service manuals you'll see it instructing you to disconnect the battery before working around the steering column and then wait a few minutes. The capacitance in the system is just to have enough power left in the system to deploy the bags in the seconds after an accident that cuts off the power in case the car takes another hit. So, I would think pulling the airbag fuse would disable the system after a few minutes. Does the airbag light come on when you do it? (But as others have said, it's not legally a wise thing to do, and I'm not responsible for anything that happens if you do disable the airbag.)

dont do it. its illegal and not safe- if you have kids or animals, put them in the back seat.

If it is illegal to temporarily disable and airbag system, then why are you allowed to go to a dealership and have them disable it for you? A lot of trucks (GM and Ford...probably more) even have a switch on the dash which lets you disable the passenger side airbag.
Shorter people (like 5'0" or less) have a greater chance of getting killed by an airbag than if there was no airbag if they are sitting too close to the steering wheel or dash.
To the original poster....I have no idea if pulling the fuse disables the airbags after the power drains out of them. Would be a good question to ask an experienced tech at a GM dealer.
