Hello All-

Does anyone have reference to the location and color of a wire that can be used to determine if the parking brake is set on a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta?

I'm hoping to find out before I start tearing into the brake lever itself.

Working on one at the moment, the wire your looking for is BROWN / yellow behind relay #173 on fusepanel. I suggest removing the 10mm bolts and then slide the connector out. Good luck.

Thanks level12 -- I appreciate the help.

I was also able to find the same wire (BROWN / Yellow) at the loom just above the gas pedal -- which is close to the brake switch as well (helpful in my particular install).

Not sure if I should put this together with my previous post, so moderators please feel free to merge this with the old one if deemed appropriate.

I'm finishing up the install of a remote starter on this vehicle (it's a manual transmission) and since it won't start unless the clutch is depressed, I'd like to lock out the starter if it's not in neutral.

Does anyone know the location/color of a wire I can use to sense the position gearshift? Does this vehicle have a neutral safety switch?

I'm also having a little trouble sorting the locks out.. the install info for the starter I have (Bulldog Deluxe 500) shows the locks as being what they call "type B", --basically 2 negative trigger wires from the starter to 2 wires at the module in the door. When I probe the wires they mention (GREEN/ red and yellow/blue) I don't see anything happening when I hit the switch. Can anyone confirm / deny these wires?

yup you are correct....the mods will not loike your question, cause it sounds like your attemting to install a starter thats NOT designed for a manual trans.

Don't do it....it's not safe, and you risk being booted from the 12v for not playing by the rules.

But please dont install an auto trans starter on a manual car. Ive seen one be started and drive accross a parking lot.

what's the problem with installing a remote starter on a manual transmission car if you hook up the neutral safety? It's 100% safe if you hook up that wire, and I personally encourage any experienced installer to install these units on a manual transmission car. I've done it, I endorse it, and it works fantastic. Automatic transmission cars come with a neutral safety from the factory so that you cannot attempt to start them in gear, so what is the difference? If it doesn't start in gear, it's safe.

P.S. There are many countries where most of the cars have manual transmissions, and people get starters installed all the time there. Go ahead, boot me.

This particular starter is designed to accommodate manual transmission cars and keys into the door trigger, parking break, and the neutral safety switch.

The problem with the car is that it won't start in neutral unless you push the clutch in. It's easy enough to use a relay to make the clutch switch report that the pedal is down - but I won't do that unless I can tie that function to the neutral safety switch.

So... any location/color for that wire?

Anyone have any insight on the power lock functions of this car?

If the unit says on the box, and in the install instructions. "For automatic trasmission only" Thats the problem. There is no way of tying in any safty features...

The ones that ecklund stated above. If you "find a way" around those safety features, you run the risk of REAL BIG problems.

Behind relay 53 you will find a RED / black, take your starter wire from the remote start to this wire INSTEAD of the starter wire at the harness. Doin this you will not need the nuetral safty switch, or wire...whatever it is. You best make sure the rest of the safety features are used, and the end user is very familiar with them.  If you bypass ANY of the safety aspects of your manual transmission remote start.....the car WILL start in gear.

Just out of curiosity...what are you installing in this manual trans automobile???

-It's a BullDog Deluxe 500 and designed for both automatic AND manual transmission vehicles...

I'm going to head out and work on it this AM, so I'll check that wire, and report back.

The starter is already interlocked to the e-brake, and won't function unless the brake is set.

To be sure: the wire you're recommending will allow the car to start in neutral without the clutch being pressed down?

The remote starter unit has a wire that must see ground for the unit to function - they recommend that this wire be be tied to the neutral safety switch - -making 3 separate checks (neutral, e-brake, door trigger).

I have never installed a remote start that needed a nuetral safty connection, so that has never been an issue for me to solve, sorry. But I have always used units that monitor door pin and ebrake for the safety sequence. They are fool proof. Try hooking the nuetral safety wire to chassis ground or the ebrake NEG(-)
