I just recently installed a viper 500esp in my 1991 nissan pickup, everything works great except for the starter kill. The truck won't start with the relay removed, I know i have the correct starter wire. I am getting a ground when armed, I have the yellow ign wire hooked up to a true ignition, not accessory. I don't know what is wrong with it. One thing i did notice was that there isn't a diode in the prewired starter kill relay plug. I bought one from radioshack today and tried it across the coil but the truck would still start with the alarm armed.

air ride all you have to do is switch your starter wires. you have them reversed. the center post of the relay which is 87a is supposed to be connected to ignition side of the starter wire and the the bottom post 30 is supposed to go to the solenoid of the starter. if you have any other questions please fell free to reply back skandalous523 ------------- car audio freak

Just an additional note: This Vehicle Is Equipped With Two Start Wires. Both Must Be Powered In Order For Vehicle To Start When Engine Is Cold ------------- Jeff

Ok still doesn't work right, I swapped the wires that lead to the ignition and starter solenoid. Still does the same thing. With the alarm armed, i will try to start it and it starts up but the alarm also goes off. I don't understand what could be wrong. There are only 4 wires! One goes to the ignition switch, the other goes to the starter solenoid, the orange one is prewired into the viper harness and the last one is the 12v ignition wire. I'm thinking maybe the ignition wire is the problem?? It shows 12v when in the run position, during cranking it obviously drops a bit to around 9 or 10v could that be causing the problem? There isn't enough voltage to trip the relay? My truck has been sitting for awhile and the battery might be getting a little weak. I put my hand on the relay while the alarm was armed, and turned the key from acc to run i feel the relay click, then when i turn the key to the start position, i feel the relay click again.

Why does turning the key in the ignition throw the switch in the relay? My understanding is that you want the output from the alarm to throw the switch, breaking the connection in the ignition wire. When you arm the alarm, the relay should click (break connection), and click again when you disarm it (makes connection). If the ignition wires are not hooked up across the coil in the relay, there should be no clicking when you turn the key. Make sure the ground when armed wire from the alarm goes to either 85 or 86 (coil), and 12V to the other. Hope this helps you out. -Alan

My data show that you have 2 starter wires. BLACK / YELLOW & BLACK/ GREEN. Looking at you last post, it seems that you have your relay connected properly. DEI uses a 3 wire starter kill relay socket & it is normal for it to click when you turn the key. If you had the wires reversed, the relay would not click when you turn the key( the relay would not get its power from the ignition switch to energize the relay). Use a meter to verify that you have 2 starter wires. If so, connect an additional relay as follows: https://www.the12volt.com/relays/page2.asp#sk1 Hope this helps. ------------- install_tech

I'll check for another starter wire tonight but i'm pretty sure there is only one. I had a excalibur alarm installed before this and the starter kill worked fine. The only difference with that one was the starter kill had 12v from the battery instead of from the ignition so it would kill the starter whenever the alarm was armed, unlike the viper which only kills it when you turn the key and have the alarm armed.

Try this. 1) verify that you have the correct starter wire, cut it and try to start the vehicle, it should not start. 2) remove the relay from the relay socket and wire the relay as follows: https://www.the12volt.com/relays/page2.asp#sk1 - or, if you prefer it to work like your excalibur did connect pin #86 to +12v constant (use a fuse holder w/ a 5 or 10 amp fuse). The relay will energize when you arm the alarm. * note** - the orange wire fom your relay socket is the ground output when armed and the yellow wire is +12v ignition.
