..I still can't get remote starter to get the vehilce to start without key in ignition in run position.

Vehicle is a 98 Limited. Had port fitted VIP 3000 which was non functioning. I removed it and the complete harness and returned vehicle to stock and it runs fine. Remote start will crank fine and run if I put key in ignition and turn to 'on' after remote start sequence begins and turn to run.

From dealer VIN search, cannot pull up records of immobilzer key or module. Before I buy a 555 bypass, anyway to check to be 100% sure ? Keys that came with vehicle are non descript , non OEM type but do have plastic body.

Thanks

You are missing a required connection in the ignition harness. There are two ignition wires in your truck, DEI lists:

Ignition      BLACK / YELLOW        +       ignition harness
Second Ignition      blk/yel or blk/red        +       ignition harness

Make sure they are both getting +12V when remote starting. The 98 4Runner does not have an immobilizer.

Thanks for the super quick response...

Both IGN 1 and IGN 2 wires are hot. I used the accesory feed from the Remote starter unit to energize the second ignition feed. As nothing I need for a remote start warm up is on the accessory circuit, I used that to simplify the wiring. I used the same technique on my 96 4runner and it was fine.

I could have used ign 2 output on remote starter unit but this simplifies the wiring.

Thanks

Ignition wiring NEEDS to be hot when starting, ACC wires drop out during the start cycle. Both of those wires need to be hot during start, otherwise it will do exactly as you are describing.

Sorry, I was not clear.

BLACK / YELLOW (IGN 1) and BLACK/ red(IGN 2) hot during start. Both are fed from remote starter unit independantly and both hot when probed during remote start sequence. GREEN / WHITE (starter) hot while cranking (makes sense as starter turns)

Blue/Red (accessory) never hot.

From a 4runner forum, I have found a few folks with late model year 98 Limiteds that claim they have immobilizer key.

Quick fix is to go have a regular key cut today and see if it starts.

shove the key into the ign. cylinder and try a remote start....if it starts with the key IN....imobilizer, pull the ky out, if it does NOT start with the key OUT....imobilizer.. Thats how I would test it.   The idea of the 2.49 key from the hardware store is also a good idea.

Ok,

Solved ! Mad Props to Twelvoltz !

I probed some more and sure enough, under actually cranking the feed to the 2nd ignition was shutting off. I have now fixed that with a relay and a negtive feed from the control units dedicated 2nd IGN output. That will teach me to cut corners.(however, this is a recommended technique in the instructions)

I alos determined from my local stealer that the key was not an immobilzer key although I have confirmed some late model 98 Limiteds do indeed have an immobilizer key.

For information, I have now worked out why it worked on my 93 4runner. The 2nd IGN circuit on the 93 4runner energizes the circuit opening relay which is a latching relay. When I installed the remote start unit in the 93, the 2nd IGN was initially energized from the +ve accessory output I was using and would latch the cicuit opening relay and  hence when the power dropped off under cranking, it did not matter.

Thanks again.
