Subject: can 2005 jeep start without chip in key

A friend of mine was wondering if it was possible to start his 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with out that big expensive key from factory. The reason he was asking this is because he said that he would really like to be able to to just leave the keys in his pocket at the beach or not having to worry about getting the remote wet. I remembered that some where I had read about being able to hide a key under the dash with chip in it(with edges ground off for safety) and being able to start that car with a blank ignition key. Or now that I think about it maybe this was a wired in RS install. In fact I think it was. Anyway this is my situation. I figured if anyone would be able you help it would be the members on here. Thanks,   JB

A regular valet key can be made without the buttons on the key.  It'll start the car and open the doors if you cut the key.

So all he needs to do is get a spare key and it will work fine? There is no kind of chip or resister in the key?

he can get a spare key from anywhere yes, but it WONT be able to start the vehicle. It will lock/unlock and activate the ignition, but it wont be able to start it. He could go that route and just leave his factory key inside the car, lock his doors and with the bare metal key in his pocket, then he could use that key to get in, and use his factory key to start it. OR....he could go the valet key route. This key will have to be cut AND programmed at the dealer, because the valet key DOES have the sentry chip in it. The valet key has a grey rubber head on it with no buttons. I would think you would be able to get it wet...but not positive. The valet key would be able to start the vehicle, but its gonna cost more than a bare metal one that doesn't start the vehicle.

iceman, im guessing you are referring to some kind of a permanant bypass of the sentry key system? You are right, it technically can be done. Wll3404, if your friend doesn't want to lose the integrity of his factory security or possible issues with his warranty, then I would do the suggested method i mentioned.

Sort of, I had a problem where we had to replace the ignition in a 2001 Jeep so we got a new one and the key. For some reason I couldnt program the new key to the car. I took the old key moved the transponder thing for it under the dash and just tapped the old key to it. Works just fine.

Thanks guys I'll run this buy him. I wouldn't even suggest this    ", if your friend doesn't want to lose the integrity of his factory security or possible issues with his warranty, then I would do the suggested method i mentioned"  For two reasons. First as a friend I would not think of doing that to what he just spent a small fortune on. Second I wouldn't want the liability. I'm hoping he'll be satisfied with this. He's gonna have to realize that he just can't go t wally world and cut a spare and along he goes.(would be nice though)

yeah, i could see how that would work. I did something similar on my old expedition. It was a 97, so it had the old style chip in the key that you could remove. It was encased in a small glass like tube, with plastic around that. I took that out of my key, and taped it to the ingintion cyclinder where you would normally put a transponder bypass ring. Worked great. I only did this because it was my vehicle, and I wanted to be able to have extra keys that were just the cheap metal ones. Granted, it was a permanant bypass, but I really didnt' care too much. I wouldn't recommend it though...haha.
