installed the door lock unlock wires on a Galaxy 5100-RS after the fact (thought it would make it so a single tap of disarm/unlock would unlock the driver door). after installing & attempting to fix the unlock/immediate lock i noticed smoke from below my instrument cluster. i shut it all down but couldn't find the source. no service engine soon light but now my dome light wont shut off when in automatic mode. is this a sign of a fried controller assembly (BCM) or is this a hidden short or burned up relay? please help & thanks in advance

Usually not hard to tell, just follow the smell. Start disassembly and you'll find it for sure...

Would also help if you gave us details of how you connected the locks.

SMOKE is NOT a good thing no matter "how", and "what" you connected.... wow, I hopw all is well.....

Still, post all of the connections you made to create the smoke.

i made all the connections on the 20 pin main harness ok, nothing happened & in fact it worked, just that i had to double tap the unlock to get the doors to unlock. i thought this was an error and couldnt find anything in the install book to say otherwise so i connected the 3 pin white door lock connector (blue wire negative unlock output, green wire negative lock output, buth -500mA). when i did that and i hit unlock it would unlock the doors & then re lock them immediately. it was when i was seeing if the programing (pulse length & unlock pulse) that i started noticing smoke. for all the connections to the BCM i used T Splice connectors from radio shack & for the large 12 gauge wire connections i stripped insulation & wired in that way, insulated with electrical tape & mil-spec stretch tape. the 3 pin door lock harness i connected the green wire to the purple wire (pin 56 @ BCM) and the blue wire to the grey wire (pin 59 @ BCM). i verified all the wires were legit with the 2006 Nissan XTerra service manual. thanks for helping out guys!

follow up - went outside immediately to check the dome light by itself (to isolate the alarm brain or BCM). i disconnected the dome light wire (BLACK/ white to brown Pin 63 @ BCM) and tried it all again. system works 5.0, guess the smoke came from the alarm brain box. sucks that its the alarm but glad its not my car. no blown fuses and everything else in the alarm works great (dont have the horn hooked up, no metal bits for my drill yet) so i think i'm not gona tempt fate & stop messing with it. thanks a ton for your advice everyone, please input more if you had any other trains of thought as it might help other troubleshooters.

Couple problems with your wiring. The grey wire at pin 59 is the unlock motor wire. You need to use the wire coming from the switch. It is either white or light green at the BCM in pin 46.

You also said you used the purple wire in pin 56. I think you meant to type 65 there. If so, that is the lock motor wire. You want to use the wire coming from the switch. Its either light green or purple in pin 45 at the BCM.

You hooked low current outputs into high current wires which caused the smoke show. If the wires are still connected that way, stop using the system immediately until you fix it.
