step by step....

remove screw holding in emergency/parking brake release, then remove the OTHER screw on the opposite side of the plastic knee bolster cover...

which will reveal the METAL knee bolster....

Once you remove the knee bolster, you'll see a black connector with a bunch of wires going into it...You'll need to slip a socket in the hole, and unscrew the screw holding the connector in.....

which looks like this...

now, remove the grey protective cover from the black connector.... the sides squeeze in, to allow them to come out...

Cut the wires per the diagram at the bottom of this post...

I used a combo of solder and crimp connectors, insulated with tape... the electrical tape serves two purposes, one, it insulates the wires, and two, it relieves stress on the connector, and the wires going into the connector...

I Opted to use shielded quick disconnects instead of a relay socket.... It makes for a lot less mess, IMO, and confuses the hell out of anyone look at it who doesn't know what they're looking at ;)

Install took about 45 mins....using common hand tools...

The defrost button is an SPST momentary switched ground (not +).

The defrost circuit is not powered while the key is in the start position, however it still sends a ground pulse to the starter relay to energize the coil (see diagram).

Defrost button retains original functionality, Defrost will NOT come on while starting the vehicle, nor will it 'accidentally' come on before/during/after the start 'cycle'... unless specifically pressed again to enable the rear defroster (normal operation, IOTW).

Very simple, and very effective....Unless you have a tow truck, or spend 30 mins. in the car trying to figure things out and rewire the ignition, the car's not going anywhere...

Forgot to mention.....

using a pair of relays, I'm going to be setting up so that if the ignition is turned without the defrost button held down, it will 'lock' the horn, siren, and all emergency lighting ON, and can't be turned off, unless a hidden switch is pressed....

THAT diagram is right here on this site....
