Hi, I am trying to install a Commando FM-870 in a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. I have all of the wires hooked up according to the wiring diagrams I found, but absolutely nothing happens when I try to activate the remote start. Here's how I have things hooked up:
12 Volt - Pink/Black
Starter - Yellow
Ignition 1 - Blue
Ignition 2 - Burgundy (Tests as Ignition)
Accessory - Green & Orange
I think my problem is in the accessory wire. All of the instructions say the green and orange wires are the accessory wires, but they test more like ignition wires and only receive power in the run position. Seems to me that it should have power when the key is in the accessory position. Does anyone know what the correct wire to use for the accessory? Thanks.

GREEN/ orange if first acc. When testing it should show 12 volts when key is turned on, and should lose voltage when the car is cranking. Do you have the grey key, and if so did you use some kind of immobilizer bypass?

Yep, that is what it does, but it doesn't have power when the key is in the Accessory position. Is that correct?

Also, I just have a black key so I didn't need an immobilizer bypass.

One other thing. Are you supposed to hear relays clicking when the remote starter is trying to start the vehicle? I don't hear anything. I'm starting to wonder if I have a defective unit.

Generally, you would a click a couple of seconds before the car would try to start. Do you have a link to the install manual for the unit. It could be something simple, but without seeing the manual, i can't know for sure. Make sure you don't have a hood pin grounded out, and also check your brake shutdown wire coming from the unit. These two wires will stop the truck from starting.

Hey, the link to the install manual is below. Just click the one that says FM-870 Install under 2-Way FM Combo Units. https://www.commandoalarms.com/tech.htm I do have a hood pin but I disconnected it just to make sure it wasn't causing a problem. I also tested the brake wire and it seem to be working ok but still nothing from the remote starter.

Do you have the BLACK/ white neutral safety switch wire going to ground, or to the toggle switch.....either way, this wire needs to see ground to start. Without it, the car won't even begin to attempt to remote start. I normally skip the switch and send it straight to ground. -------------

Yeah, I just went out and double checked that I have it hooked up to ground which I do. I also verified that it has a good ground.

okay....Heres some more for you. Did you program the tach ? Do any of the functions on the tx work? Are you pushing the * button twice.....If so, check all your wires again, and if everything is correct i would say you have a bad unit.....odd, but it happens

No, I didn't hook up the tach wire. I was planning on using voltage sensing. Wouldn't the system still attempt to start the truck even if it's not hooked up? I thought the tach wire was just so it knows to disengage the starter. Would it still need to be programmed before it will work?
The tx seems to the working. It will arm and disarm the alarm ok. It will give two beeps after I hit *-* to start the truck, but I haven't been able find anything in the manual about what that means.
I'll try hooking up the tach wire tomorrow and see if that helps.

It looks like the unit is set up for tach sensing as a default.....in this case, yes it would need to be programmed......you can change the feature to voltage sense (start feature II programming, step 2) and then it should start. i would recommend tach, but for testing purposes, either or will work. -------------

Hey, just as a follow up, I finally got the remote starter working tonight. Turns out that with the FM-870 you need to go in and program it for either tach or voltage sensing before it will attempt to start. I set it for voltage sensing and then it started right up. It seems to be working ok on that setting so I'm not going to bother with the tach wire. Thanks for your help mikvot.
