just put a viper 791 in, and the range blows...it only works from like 150ft. away..........i tried straightening out the antenna wire, and moving the antenna from behind my front window  tint and put it down low, and it still blows...is it just a viper problem, or can i try anything else to get better reception? other people say they really like theirs, and others are like mine....why are they different? what can i do to help mine? thanks

Make sure that your system ground is to a paint/primer free piece of metal in the kick panel, not to a factory bolt and not to the under dash metal.

or get the viper 5900... the range difference is amazing... i had the 791xv and got the 5900 cause of the lack of range, it works about 4 times as far as the 791 does... and its a lot better thru walls, etc.

you should expect about 1500' consistently with the 791... about 4-5000' consistently with the 5900

You know I always hear this, but in 16 years I have never understood how grounding to a factory bolt could be worse? There is more surface area in those threads than necessary for a sufficient ground. Alot of times the factory grounds the same way. And you have a bolt which will most likely never loosen, opposed to a self tapping screw which has a greater chance of loosening or not being secure in the first place. Who really scrapes the paint away in the kick for an alarm install? I doubt many do.

Not meaning to contradict you Twelvoltz. If you have more insight on this I'm all ears. I like to learn new things and if theres some theory on this I'd love to see it.

Youd be surprised on who does.  You even are supose to use a washer along with sanding the paint off.

the cross braces under the dash are bolted to the chassis sub-structure and over time these connections where the bolts mount can oxidize or worse come loose....   i have metered the cross members on a chev truck with the vehicle off and gotten 15-20 ohms resistence to ground (it should be about 1 ohm!), and with the vehicle running had 150 ohms resistence at the same point... yet going to the metal in the DKP brought it back down to 4-5 ohms running....  a huge voltage differential !!

i always go directly to the metal right in the DKP now to avoid having to troubleshoot a range issue 2 or 3 years later.....
