Instead of puting a car alarm in, I saw an add in our local penny saver mag advertising a 12 volt blinking red lite - this supposed to fool  car theivies away! The catch is they want 40 big ones to install it!  The store said they has to take out my dashboard and do some wireing under the dash? I thought you could just  plug it in with your car batteryor cig lighter wire?. Is there a better way to install this animal without ripping the dash out?

looking for suggestions and comments

They are taking you for a ride !! All they have to do it drill a hole for the LED to go through and hook up two wires to the flashing LED and they are done. They can run wires to the fuse box and bypass having to rip out your dash altogether. I can do thi in less than 15 minutes.

Jeff: thanks.

Do I need to install a relay for this blinking lite or just wire it to the fuse box?

Last question Jeff.

How do I hook it to the ignition switch -?  I don't want it to blink when I am driving -just when the motor is off like an alarm.  that is why I was askin about a relay.  thanx

Paddy, to prevent it from coming on with the ignition, cut one lead of the flashing LED and connect it to #30 and connect the other side to #87a of an SPDT relay. Connect #85 to ignition and #86 to ground. #87 is not used.

I also installed a blinking LED in my dash to serve as a dummy alarm system.

I control it with a simple SPST rotary switch.  This switch is wired from an "always-hot" wire which leads to my stereo's head unit, but any "always-hot " wire would do. A relay is not necesary.

The switch I used is Parts Express part #060-382 and it cost me $2.25 (partsexpress.com) and it comes with wire leads. I drilled a 3/8" hole under my dash to mount the switch...and a 1/4 " hole to mount the LED.

I simply turn it off when I am in the car.

thanx for the help!

12volt- can you diagram your installation for me - I'm not sure what you mean by "cut one lead of the flashing LED and connect it to #30 and connect the other side to #87a ..."
