I *started* installing a Code Alarm CA670 on my friends 05 Pontiac G6. I didnt get to far b/c of the weather but I noticed his check engine light was on when I got to my stopping point. I questioned him about it and he said it wasnt on that morning. The only steps I got done were the door triggers (four wires in the BCM) wired, the trunk release wired, the door locks with two relays (and 1.5kOhm resistor on unlock) done, and the ground. No power, no ignition, no acc wires were connected. All the BCM plugs were connected when he left, no wires were cut just probed here and there. I dont think the CEL is related to the minute amount of work I did but I just wanted to run it by the professionals here to see. I'll see him and the car this evening and it would be good to know that I wasnt the culprit. His car has 40k miles on it and he's not a mechanically or service inclined person.

Thanks!

Disconnect the positive terminal of the battery for 10 minutes, then re-attach --> see if that erases any transient codes.  If not, I can tell you that I've gotten CEL's come on when installing remote starters after messing with BCM's or incorrectly using resistors for various things (especially on Jeeps/Chryslers).

Occom's Razor says: The simplest answer is usually the right answer ---> so your tinkering with the r/s install is the most likely cause of the CEL.

so just by connecting the door triggers, trunk trigger, and locks, the car displays the CEL? there's not any power being fed to the alarm or anything, none of the remote start features are connected, nor are there any factory wires related to the remote start (ignition, 12v, acc) connected to anything. If this is the case, it sounds like an ultra sensitive car.

I'm wondering if I should diode isolate the wires coming out of the relays to the lock/unlock wire (with the cathode facing the factory wire).... still, even at this point, the relays don't have power either.

It's really hard to say -- i recall one time messing with the SECU of a nissan maxima  (no harnesses plugged into the r/s brain) i set the factory alarm off and several lights on the dash came on including CEL -- i reset the batt. and cleared the ECM of the codes -- all i did was plug and unplug a few harnesses into the SECU.

You should not have to diode isolate the lock/unlock wires off the brain (none of my notes indicate that this is necessary).  The problem also arises with changing the resistance in that common lock/unlock white wire in the G6 -- if it's not the right resistance, that could send a code to the BCM which may somehow (and I'm not saying i know this) interfere with ECM codes.  Try cliping your r/s wire off the white common lock/unlock G6 wire and see if the code goes away -- if not, reset the battery as prev. mentioned.

I'll do that. is the 1.5kOhm resistance correct per  your notes or do you have (or have you used) a different amount?

Yes, 1500ohm (1.5kohm) is spot on:

I used to own an 06 Pontiac Torrent and I'm not sure about other Pontiacs, but my security light stayed lit and everything worked fine.

Sorry for the delay in posting an update. The car never displayed the CEL since. hasn't had a problem.

I noticed yesterday that I'm having a problem getting the alarm to go into programming mode. To do so, you keep the door open, turn the key to "on", and hold the valet button. The alarm shouldl chirp three times. Instead, the lcd remote makes a small sound and an icon of a circle with "zzz" in it appears on the lcd display. When I read more, I notice the procedure for valet mode is the same for programming except the door isn't open. So, I'm wondering if since there isnt a bonafide door pin on this car (like a real-deal door pin such as what I have on my 07 Saturn Ion) if the alarm isnt truly seeing the door open. I was going to try grounding the negative door trigger which would make the alarm think the door is open and try programming from there.

Any thoughts?

the car has to have a door trigger - did you diode isolate them? or did you tap into the dome light?

I found 4 wires, one for each door, in the BCM and tapped into those. I tapped into each wire and used a diode on each prior to connecting all four to the alarm's neg door trigger wire. The alarm will respond if the door is opened while armed; it just wont go into program mode (with the 3 chirps) with the door open, key on. I couldnt find the icon that I mentioned in either the install or the owner's manual but after reading the directions for going into valet mode, I'm thinking that's what the icon represents.

I have had the cel come on after quite a few gm installs... remote start, amp, deck... and every time the cel has gone off with a trip around the block, sometimes just backing it up out of the install bay. Alot of newer cars get weird when you disconnect power for any reason and seem to auto repair. Land Rover tells you that you have to drive a bit after swaping the batterry to get rid of the brake and cel to go off.

The wounderful check engine light. In my trade as an automotive tech.I have heard lots from people saying the work I did put on their check engine light. In a lot of cases it is not remember after 1997 with OBD II the codes are 4 digit. That's right they are in the thousands thats how many reasons there is for the check engine light to come on.You can easily buy a code reader very cheap now from an auto parts store.
