I have a 2001 Dodge Stratus Sedan (automatic, power windows, door locks) and am looking in to buying a self installed security alarm with remote start. I would like some advice as to which direction to go in. I have Viper on another vehicle but was pro installed. I have had no issues with it yet am wondering if there are others that might be even better as far as quality and installation ease. Thanks!

Well....if you want a "viper" you'll need to buy it on line some place. OR buy it from a delaer that doesn't care about his aggreement with DEI, NOT to sell over the counter. If you desire a DEI product, look for automate, hornet, python..... These products CAN be sold over the counter to an individual looking to do a self install.

im not sure kartuneman but I think Python is also protected(in some way).  If you want a DEI product then you may go with a Hornet.  It has the same exact wiring as the vipers and pythons except that it has a different antenna and remotes.  You can also go with Autocommand which is the same EXACT wiring as the Hornet two way.  I sell the Hornet/valet(both the same) and have had no issues.  They have very decent range and are rated at 1000ft.  Reason why I like DEI prodructs is because they have a satellite relay that has a built in starter kill.  No need to add a different relay for the starter kill.  Just connect the green to key side and purple to starter side.  Good Luck

python is protected too. well that if shops/stores dont care. but i always wounder with the hornet and valet line will DEI fix the unit if for some reason it broke, that if a coustmer bought it and installed it.

I love viper, but after the fact I heard about compustar. if I didn't get a viper I'd get one of those. their high end model seemed a little higher in price, but had even more fun features, like tells you the temp inside your car on the remote, shows a countdown on the remote for how much longer your car will stay running after remote started. I believe they claim their remotes go farther as well.

I got a DEI viper 5900 off amazon.com for $240 shipped. I fricken love it. I also have the factory honda manuals for my car, with all the wiring diagrams, so I knew ahead of time what wires did what, and if I needed a relay or not. from amazon.com, I also threw in the DEI battery backup, glass sensor, trunk popper kit, immobilizer bypass module (my key has a chip in it,) and power window module. all together it was $400 shipped, took about a week and a half to get all the products, as they were from three different online retailers under amazon. be sure to send in the warranty card as soon as you get it. you get 10 days to send it in after purchase, I never sent mine in. not sure if they'll even warranty it if not installed professionally, but it's worth a shot. also if it's installed professionally, they'll give you 'up to $2,500' for your insurrance deductable. I installed mine myself, 10x better than any installer would ever do, but I don't get that money if it's stolen.

basically I went to the viper website, and picked the most expensive remote start/alarm they sell. there is one model higher than mine, the only difference being the remote. they had one with a full color lcd screen (like any decent cell phone) which looks awesome, but also costs $160 to replace the remote itself. I got one remote with my alarm, and it costs $100 to replace. it's 2 way, so when the alarm goes off, it pages the remote. so I can be at a buddies appartment, park anywhere, and know my car is still in contact with me. this viper claims 1 mile range on the 2way, but that's pry in unobstructed line of site. but I can go to the mall, and still lock/unlock my car from inside, how cool is that. my remote takes a AAA battery, the full color one had an internal rechargable battery, if you loose the charger then you'll need a new one. screw that, I have tons of rechargable NiMH AAA's sitting around. it also has 3 extra channels on the remote, plus the AUX button works your trunk (sends a ground as long as you hold it.) I'm gonna try to rig up my car so an extra channel turns on the ac, cause I always forget to turn the ac back on when I leave my car.
